The ratings system is completely arbitrary and outdated
America's rating system is geared toward our arse-backward sensitivities.
Boobies - oh no!
Gratuitous violence - meh, that's cool.
Europe is the opposite...nudity in films is more akin to our PG...and our violent comic-book movies are more R-rated to them.
For example, in countries such as the U.S., films with strong sexual content are often restricted to older viewers, whereas in countries such as France and Germany, sexual content is viewed much more leniently.
On the other hand, films with violent content are often subject in countries such as Germany and Finland to high ratings and even censorship, whereas countries such as Australia offer more lenient ratings to violent movies.
France, England, Iceland, Ireland and Sweden banned "A Texas Chainsaw Massacre and A Clockwork Orange" upon their release.

These threads are ridiculous. I saw my first R rated movie when I was like 7
I first saw one of the Friday the 13th movies when I was 6 or 7.
I'm 34 years old and I still have occasional nightmares of Jason chasing me through the woods.

Kids are screwed because their parents do not discipline them. I don't know if it's parents just wanting to be best friends with their kids or just being too lazy to provide appropriate discipline, but I see it all the time.
I think though that sheltering a 16 year old from an R-rated movie is a bit weird.

interestingly Hudson Hawk around 8 or 9 was my first R Rated movie.
i had a holy crap moment when i realized Xander Rice from Logan was Mayflower from Hudson Hawk.

Imo I could see restricting what a kid sees if he is young enough for something to be too intense for him or her. Like a 5 year old probably shouldn't see whatever the latest horror movie is. It's just asking for a bad time. I think that would also depend on the individual.
Mostly I could see sheltering a young child from things that could upset them, but I would let a teenager watch whatever he wanted. Maybe some subject matters need a conversation, but a complete banning shouldn't be necessary. Just discuss what a fantasy is or a depiction of abhorrent behavior and why it is bad or what is appropriate language to use and such. I was watching stuff like A Clockwork Orange when I was like 14. People have different values though.

I had a friend who was a neighbor and his parents let him check out anything - our local VHS rental place back in the 80's even had a "T & A" labeled section...and the Dad had about 4 years worth of Penthouse just on his bookshelf.
So at 8-10 years old, I was watching...
This was porn before the internet...unless you could actually find a real porn VHS tape which were exchanged at school in the black market.

My dad rented us movies to watch in the 80's and if it didn't have an R rating, he wasn't renting it. We were only 7-10 years old.
There was one in particular where they raped a woman a woman and cut off one if her tits. The Executioner or something. We watched some crazy shite. My mom would rent us G and PG movies. Some were great but most sucked because we were already acclimated to violence and nudity there was none in those movies. 80s were a fun time.

I made the mistake of taking my 16 year old daughter. Too much cursing and I was surprised to see the nudity. I think they are trying to piggyback off of the success of Deadpool. Overall really good movie but they could have left off a ton of the cursing.

My family didn't bother to pay attention to ratings.
I grew up the same way. It was awesome.
Yeah and you're all a bunch of nihilists living on a mix of constant entertainment, alcohol, and anti-depressants, our politics are a complete clown-show, your women are slags almost without fail, and the western world is a few decades from being overrun by barbaric Muslims, so we see how that turned out.
See?

You're describing Idiocracy, not reality.
Oh wait, never mind.

brief nudity
the kid have an iphone? PC? MAc? Ipad? If so he watches a lot more than brief nudity every night on those. Guaranteed.
ETA: Love the downvotes like people don't know 16 year olds don't whack it just about every time you aren't actually looking at them. Point is a couple seconds of tits won't even move the needle. The violence you might have a problem with.
