Well, I sort of detest Alan Moore, so that's one of the key problems right there.

I think you mean Frank Miller. He wrote 300.

Yeah, that was weird. Meant to type Miller and said Moore. Moore is an oddball and I don't muck like his later work, but he had a period of deranged brilliance.

Miller has his moments, but he really has a near pornographic depiction of violence. It's not gritty realism, it's just gratuitous love of violence. I know some in the comics community think he's a fascist, like a for real fascist, but I wouldn't go that far. I just think he is actually sexually aroused by his own depictions of extreme violence. His world is the one most ably critiqued by Watchmen. I fall on that side f the divide -- people who would actually dress up in tights and beat people up are mentally damaged. Miller is just a suck up to power.

300 the movie took the problems with the source material and amped them up to 100.

If only we could have gotten a filmed version of "Gates of Fire" - by Pressfield (of course not a comic product, but a historical novel).

Perhaps that gets an HBO/Showtime (or, heck, AMC, FX, etc.) treatment of 6 to 8 episodes - that would be just about right for the ~450 densely packed pages.

I hear they are making Bone into a movie. Once they ruin that, let's destroy Cerebus next.

Loved Bone. Could be a great cartoon.

Singer doesn't take the fall on XMEN. Fox does for proceeding with Rattner while Singer was making Superman Returns

Spider-Man 3 is terrible but I blame that on the studio.

I know it's cool to hate on IM2&3 but when compared to Hulk, Green Lantern, Catwoman, Batman and Robin, Daredevil, F4, F4:RotSS, and Green Hornet, the haters can STFU. They weren't the worst, but they weren't bad.

I adore Bone. It is one of my all time favorite comics. But a movie version terrifies me. There's no way they'll be able to do it as multiple movies, so I'm positive its just going to be some truncated mess. I'm not optimistic it ever actually gets made.

It would work much better as an HBO series.

ecause, apparently, comic book nerds have terrible taste in movies. Singer and Raimi are among the two best comic book directors. SpiderMan 3 was an overstuffed production, but it doesn't change the fact the fact the first two were great and he did Darkman, which was f'n awesome (ask your parents, kids) Snyder is awful. He's got the depth of a thimble and while he clearly read and loved Watchmen, he didn't understand it at all (and to be fair, it was best possible Watchmen we were ever gonna get). 300 is almost comical in its over the top style. If I was looking for a guy to shoot a music video, Snyder would be man, but the guy doesn't understand things like plot, character, or dialogue. But he sure does like them flashy effects.

Spot on, as usual, Baloo.

The only people that hate singer are comic readers. I didn't read any and it xmen and x2 were enjoyable enough. In a world where most comic book movies blow, x2 was a pleasant surprise

I can see how people who were fairly unfamiliar with the source material could like the original X-Men - I don't know what to tell y'all on the rest.

Even with retconning, the books are just better - as it is commonly the case with most, if not all, screen adaptations. Other than 2001 and Bladerunner - I've yet to see a filmed adaptation exceed the source material, although some are roughly equal (Hunt for Red October, and The Firm, are 2 notable examples.)

One of the things that pissed me off about X-men and X2 was Rogue. Shitty use of a good character. Same goes for Cyclops.

I also didn't like the chick with adamantium fingernails Wolverine fought in X2. Should've just cast X-23 and gone from there.

Overall, the movies could've been much worse.

That's the style of the movie. Its pretty unique IMO. Not every movie has to look like Gladiator.

Thank goodness. If every movie had cinematography and editing as shitty as Gladiator's, I wouldn't watch movies

Worse comic book movie director: Raimi or Singer

I've avoided this topic, and I rag on Singer a bunch, but..........

For what he's given us I still think it's quite good. And Raimi is awesome, while Spider-Man 3 is either a giant f-you to the studios, or it's just misunderstood, it isn't as bad on successive watches as it was on the first watch, which I think was a classic case of expectations just being too damn sky high. Spider-Man 2 is still a Top 5 superhero film, and is one of the best pure translation yet.

As for everyone else mentioned in this thread - Snyder, Schumacher, etc. - I just think the medium is EXTREMELY tough to get right. I mean we've seen it all, pure translations (Sin, City, Watchmen, Spider-Man 2, The Avengers), inspirational pieces that don't mimic (Nolan's Trilogy), embellishments (Schumacher), and everything in between. I think for those who stay in the game of superhero films it becomes a constant struggle to appeal to 60 years of history, frothing fans, and a wider audience that few genres have to contend with. Making ONE qualified movie that is well received is almost enough to say "They aren't the worst."

And there are so many misunderstood movies in the genre as well, Ang Lee's Hulk, Spider-Man 3, Iron Man 3, The First Avenger, Batman Forever, all from directors we might label as "terrible." (And I think there are big blunders from good directors, see TDKR).

It also depends on far out are we expanding "comic book movie director." If we're starting to include Sommer, Bay, etc., then this is a different discussion.

So back to the short answer:
quote:

Worse comic book movie director: Raimi or Singer

Neither, I like both, and comic book fans should too.

Well I liked Gladiator but 300 was a comic book based movie whose main feature was the stylized violence, a style I don't know if we'd seen in a movie.

Every director outside of Nolan, Scorcese, and a few select others have some stinkers.

Oz and Jack the giant slayer weren't great, but Drag me to Hell and Valkrie were.
