Some good news for the box office.

“Wonka” has notched another sweet box office benchmark. The fantasy musical, starring Timothée Chalamet as the eccentric, fictional chocolatier, has crossed $600 million globally.
After 10 weeks on the big screen, “Wonka” has generated $210 million in North America and $395.1 million internationally for a towering worldwide tally of $604.9 million. It’s a notable milestone because only seven films that were released in 2023 managed to surpass the $600 million mark.
Warner Bros. backed the $125 million-budgeted film, which has impressively remained in the top five on domestic box office charts since its debut in December. Chalamet’s star power, as well as brand recognition from Roald Dahl’s seminal novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” the 1971 film adaptation with Gene Wilder, and the 2005 reboot starring Johnny Depp, helped “Wonka” endure at the box office.

The global phenomenon that is Anyone but You keeps on chugging along nicely and even recently passed something of a cultural milestone. The movie, which features Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell as a ridiculously good-looking duo, who go from lovers to enemies to lovers again, has been a stunning sleeper hit for Sony Pictures but what some fans may not know about the movie is that it is adapted from one of William Shakespeare's best-known texts, Much Ado About Nothing.
The success of the film, which has now grossed $189 million globally after grossing $7.8 million this weekend internationally on top of a $2.83 million four-day domestic haul, also solidifies its place at the top of another list — the film is the highest-grossing live-action Shakespeare adaptation in film history. Now, some context should be applied here. This does not include 2019's The Lion King, which is marketed as live-action but is entirely CGI animation. This list is also not adjusted for inflation. Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, for example, would be sitting at nearly $300 million if that were the case. But the numbers are what they are.

Wonka I'm surprised by but maybe I'm just cynical.
Anyone But You does make sense. It's been awhile since we just had a simple, fun romantic comedy starring two attractive and likable leads who haven't managed to piss off half the country through social media.

I think Wonka's success derives from a total lack of new kids movies at the box office.
The movie is fine but it really helps when there is no competition.

It's a much better movie than I anticipated going in. It's funny, with two very likable characters as leads, and Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell have really good on-screen chemistry. The enemies to lovers plot is fun, and apparently is loosely based on Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing. Just a fun and enjoyable rom-com. The plot does involve a lesbian couple getting married, so if that triggers you, you might want to skip it, but they are not the focus of the movie.

I haven't seen a single person talk about Wonka or have seen it but its making a bunch of money.

Saw Wonka last night and was quite impressed. Beautifully done in my opinion.

Also, I remember all of the stuff from when that Sydney Sweeney movie came out, but never heard about it again.
I assumed it bombed

I watched Anyone but You and did not care for it, but that's good if others in here enjoyed it.
Aside from their looks I'm not sure the characters are likeable. Of course this movie made sure to check a lot of boxes too.

I believe the board’s consensus when it released was that it was woke because Slugworth* was black.

bit of over the top cheesiness expected from a romantic comdey, but it wasn't terrible.
gay side characters were inconsequential to making the story good or bad.

It was a fairly strong kids movie. All 3 of mine loved it, had decent music and the movie looked great. I’m sure there will be a bunch of 40 year olds who shite on it because it “isn’t their wonka.”

SlugWORTH. Slughorn is Broadbent in Harry Potter.
SlugWORTH is the major villain in Wonka. if that makes it woke, I don’t see it.

You’re right.

He was woke because he was white in the original and not in this one. I don’t think that, but it’s what the discussion boiled down too. I thought it was pretty good, especially the last song.

I feel like it's because everything else released has been pure crap so decent movies are getting stronger numbers

Slugworth isn't IN the original. It's stated at the end of the movie that the man Charlie met wasn't Slugworth at all but someone pretending to be him to tempt Charlie. He's actually named Mr. Wilkinson.
Just makes me how many of the people complaining actually SAW the original.

Saw it the other day and thoroughly enjoyed it. Was a nice addition to the lore of Wonka and had some really good ways of tying in some benchmark items from the original in meaningful ways.
As far as Slugworth is concerned, it honestly had absolutely no impact on the story at all. I had my worries with just how so many movies are right now that they would use it as a plot point, but that wasn't the case. It was a character, he happened to be black. Actor did a great job with the role.

I loved Wonka. It's success is well deserved.

McClintock! would be around $146 million (based in Taming of the Shrew).

absolutley this. the only other kids option at the closest theater to me is migration. We saw both of those movies before Christmas. When I checked yesterday to find something to do on Presidents day I was surprised either was still in theaters.
