I agree. I've always felt those love potions were, for lack of a better term, problematic at best and a little frightening in how they would be applied to the real world. It seems like JK did not really think things through when she included them as a way to make love sick teen jokes.
Yeah this movie doesn't really hold up for similar reasons

Because they rape, but they save.

There are plenty of plot holes in Harry Potter...but I still love it.

One thing to consider is that there are theories about wizards being technically a different species than muggles. Their biological makeup is different than ours and their behaviors can't be judged by the same standards.

I think I read about it in the context of "Why don't wizards just enslave or destroy all non-wizards?" It's because their instincts are to hide and stay away from humans much like a shrew in the ground.

Buncha goddamn commie liberals in this thread.

Potions don't rape people.

PEOPLE RAPE PEOPLE!

Yeah, but that one seems incredibly avoidable. Just have the Love Potion be how Voldemort was conceived, and that's it.

Still better than the Stargate Universe rape stones.

Plot holes are kind of unavoidable to some extent or at the very least very tricky in a world where magic is real. Magic is literally a hack where you can do whatever you want and use deus ex machinas to force the story to unfold however you want. More so than other stories you just kind of have to take things as they are presented and decide whether you think they are clever enough as within the idioms of the story.

But yeah, it is amusing that the Weasleys were just essentially selling rape potions, they had all the possible resources they need to prove Sirius' innocence, and there is also this apparent network that can track all (underage) witches and wizards, but it is only used when it is convenient to the story.

I feel bad for the teachers, having to read feet of parchment from kids with no schooling in English.

Otherwise, what's stopping some sadistic wizard from stealing, raping, or murdering any muggle they wanted and then memory charming them and perhaps another unwitting victim into forgetting or claiming guilt for said act?

Sounds like fan fiction material. Do you want 50 Shades of Gray to happen? Because this is how 50 Shades of Gray happens.
