Horror movies have been on an incredibly strong run since 2017. It’s not been just this last year

Just seems like in the last year, maybe 2, there's been a flurry of above average horror movies.

Maybe part perception, but Grok seems to think so as well.

Weapons is already at a profit. 38 million dollar budget. This is easy money for studios.

I’ve always seen horror as an easy way to generate impact on people. Good, bad, scary, funny, shocking, etc. There are no limits and you can make your own rules.

Sketch

Never heard of this one so I watched the trailer.

That is most definitely not horror, unless I watched the wrong trailer for a movie named Sketch that came out in summer 2025.

Sketch was the mystery movie a few weeks ago. I didn’t see it but I remember reading a few of the comments saying it was too scary for their kids so they walked out. I think the “horror” is on the level of goosebumps.

Horror has always been consistently profitable genre going back to the Universal Monsters in the 1930s. It’s really the only thing making profit in theaters now a days.

Edit: only time I can think of when horror wasn’t making money was the early 90s due to the 80s slasher burnout and being replaced by psychological thrillers until Scream came out.

I have to say I’m not just impressed with the number of movies, but the variety as well. We’re not getting assembly line slasher movies as we had in the past.

There is always a lot of horror movies. They fund the big budget movies.

Cuz they're profitable and often original. They don't have to be big budget like superhero movies or work within any confines of established storylines like remakes. Some of the horror movies we've gotten in the past 10-15 years are some of the best films the genre has to offer.

this is great news.

The more mid budget horror films/films we get the better for everyone.

Not every movie needs to be a dude with a cape who can fly for $250 million.

Outstanding news.

It has historically been a micro budget genre to where you can have no name casts, little production values, and make massive profits if you catch fire.

Think the likes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween in the 70s and Blair Witch in the 90s.

You can make 10 horror movies and 9 may be schlock which doesn’t make a profit but that 10th one tends to make enough to offset the rest.

Horror has always been a great genre when done right.

Cool films and everyone makes money if it hits.

The fact that more horror movies are being made shows off the waning intelligence of American Society, nobody wants to watch thrillers anymore or a plot that actually has character development ….full of twist and turns, keeping you on the edge of the seat, guessing and wondering who did this or who did that

Jump scare movies are coming out left and right, and it is a testament of how fricking stupid humanity is becoming

Tell you me you haven't been paying attention to movies without telling me you haven't been paying attention to movies. Just last year we had Longlegs, Heretic, Oddity, Juror #2.

ETA: The horror/thriller genre absolutely has not been just jump scare movies left and right. It has had some of the best depth and variety in cinema currently. Your comment would have made much more sense in a discussion around the comic book movies.
