They’re all rooted in Arthurian style lore.

The Lord of the Rings.

Starring Earl Dibbles Jr as Frodo, Poo Poo Broussard as Samwise Gamgee, Kid Rock as Aragorn, and Sam Elliot as Gandalf.

Well historically speaking - The Holy Roman Empire lineage is part of - you guess it - British Royal blood.

So there's that.

And generally since the Empire itself was always going to be a mis-mash of cultures - Italians, Franks, etc. - there's barely a single language post Latin and probably no discernible "accent" for someone who speaks English but is "Roman."

So, it's more of an easy way to distinguish itself from "American accents" in early filmmaking. Making it feel otherworldly.

I never had strong opinions about fantasy movie accents until I saw Kevin Costner as Robin Hood.

He's talking in an acceptable British accent telling his men some righteous plan they are are bout to embark on, then loses his accent and in a very California accent says, "Now, move your tents." It took me out of movie. Robin Hood & California don't go together.

Because it would be weird if they had Cajun accents.

Costner and director Kevin Reynolds were at odds w/each other over that actually. Costner wanted to do an accent and Reynolds thought was distracting. So during filming sometimes there would be multiple takes of a scene with and without the accent, scenes where that were only filmed w/the accent, and scenes that were filmed w/o the accent which made it impossible to have his performance remain consistent once it was edited together.

The battle over the accent is probably what initially laid the groundwork for the falling out between the two that caused Reynolds to quit during the filming of Waterworld when he became fed up with Costner challenging nearly every creative decision he tried to make.

They were eventually able to patch up the relationship enough to work together again a little over 10 years later w/the mini series Hatfields an McCoys.

Although now passed away, Varney was a tremendous, classically-trained Shakespearean actor. You want to knew what a Southern fantasy accent would be like, go watch this. LINK

It's actually tremendously regal sounding and would work quite well in the right application.

From Kentucky, so if anyone could make a Baw accent work in a fantasy film it would've been Jim lol
