I can understand at first not wanting to point it out. But after it became clear that no one was going to mention it she could have come up with some way to get the point across.

Exactly, which is why after about 30 seconds of her parents not saying anything, she would've been like "Um...hello, it's my fricking birthday...jeez!"
Awesome movie, but it really could've been handled in the first ten minutes if she just opens her mouth and acts like a normal person.
