Why are good movie podcasts so rare?

Recently I watched When Evil Lurks and wanted to listen to some podcasts discussing it. I downloaded a few random and was faced with the same bullshite I typically do: the podcasts were 99% just literally going through the plot, scene by scene. Almost any random podcast I try for movies ends up the same way.
It really made me appreciate the Rewatchables. For all of its flaws, they get into all the big stuff about the movie and actually discuss the movie as a whole, its history, interesting parts of production, the personal reactions, etc.
The Big Picture is so so to me (although admittedly it's not a "scene by scene" podcast), but I do enjoy draft episodes.
Movie podcasts that I have found to like:
The Rewatchables
How did this get made (although haven't really listened in probably 5 years)
Unspooled (in small doses. I download a lot of episodes and end up not listening)
But in terms of podcasts that aren't major things, I've only found 2 that I really enjoy:
The Evolution of Horror
Journey Through Sci Fi
*ETA: anybody have any good recommendations? Especially for horror/sci fi?

That sounds like it takes some research while a scene by scene reaction probably doesn't involve much work.

The Cine-Files goes very in depth, with many stretching over multiple episodes. They just did JFK in November and it was 4 episodes and each episode was around 2 hours.

Eh… when they have Van Latham on.. he can derail a podcast like no other. It’s an instant skip if he’s on it.

Yes and no to both of these statements.
Simmons can be a complete idiot sometimes and miss the point of scenes and characters. Just basic themes sometime elude him. However, he does a good job with general discussion of the movies and keeping it on tract.
As for Van Latham, I find him entertaining sometimes, like in the Midnight Boys. I find that I either 100% agree with his positions or 100% disagree. He had a really good appearance on Simmons' podcast recently where he took the media to task for giving Deion Sanders as pass when his team regressed during the season.

Unfortunately a lot of the big movie podcasts are extremely pretentious. Like The Big Picture for example. Tried listening to their review of Cocaine Bear and Sean felt he had to bring up his thoughts on the Reagan admin and the war on drugs during the review.

That’s what makes Unspooled unlistenable to me. They’re at such pains to outwoke each other and seem unable to view a film within the context of the era in which is was made.

Most of them are people just bitching about shite. Even if I agree with the things they're complaining about, it gets old REALLY fast. Like Drinker's Chasers. After a while you just get bored with no one actually discussing anything but rather just complaining about the same shite over and over again.
Buuuuut... that's what gets them views and listens, so they roll it out every time.

Oh yeah I saw that when I refreshed my podcasts this morning .., I got so excited then I saw van and got instantly annoyed and deleted it bc I know he’s gonna ruin the episode

I have 3 I really like:
Pure Cinema Podcast - this one is 2 guys who pick a category (examples- Horror All-Nighters, Christmas Carnage, 50’s cult movies, etc) and then give their top recommendations for films in that episode’s category. Tons of episodes and still currently churning them out.
Now It’s Dark Movie Podcast - 2 guys who talk about current films in depth. Very much not a “discuss the plot” type podcast, much deeper. They release episodes very sporadically and don’t have a huge back catalog. But, when they put one out it’s high quality.
Enter the Void - really good discussion of genre films like you’re looking for. The problem is, the podcast ended in 2019. But, there are a lot of episodes and they’re very good.
Hope you find one you like!
