In my personal opinion it was Michael, Michael was teh show. If you want to get technical though, the show continued without him so I guess by definition he probably wasn't the main character in which case it'd be Jim. But let's be honest the office was garbage without michael anyway.

And LOL at suggesting it could have potentially even been Pam.

The true emphasis was always Jim and Pam's story. However, the way everything ended you could actually argue that the story was really about Dwight's redemption and rise to office manager.

It was Michael. It was his interaction with every other character that drove the show.

Yeah, none of it flies without Michael.

Who's the next most important is Thunderdome.

That’s why it became unwatchable after he left.

Jim's POV

This. The audience entered The Office from Jim's perspective (normal guy stuck at a desk job with a socially awkward boss and his love interest sitting across from him).

Jim seemed to be the primary focus, mainly because he functioned as the TV audience surrogate, casting a dubious and bemused eye on the happenings in Scranton. He is essentially the everyman of the show. He's the one who realizes just how ridiculous everything is, which is the whole raison d'etre for the show in the first place.

That doesn't necessarily mean he's the most important character to the show's success, though. The problem with everymen (and everywomen) is they don't really stand out as much as characters developed with strong personality quirks and unorthodox behavior. So, personally, I consider Michael and Dwight to be the primary contenders for that title, ultimately coming down on the side of Michael even if they did manage to keep the show going for a while after he left. Those were the two who really defined the humor of the show through their characterizations.

Once Michael left, Dwight's character arc was the most interesting part of the show.

I always thought the show had a star wars pic. Thus is my own opinion but SW always seemed to be from the droids pov with them acting as narrators while the "main characters" did their part. Jim always seemed to be like the droids for me.

Season 8 wasn't great.

Season 9 was pretty good, though.

meh...The truth is that there wasnt a main character. But if you had to pick one it would be Jim. Because Jim was supposed to represent the audience. Thats why he always is looking at the camera. Michael was something you and Jim experienced together.

I mean, when Jim leaves Scranton, a storyline goes with him. The story didnt follow Michael when he left scranton.
