Another fun fact: Col. Jessup was in the right the entire time.
No he fricking wasn't and he's the worst kind of moron to have in charge of anything. Dumb delusional frickhead was living in a fantasy world where Cubans were going to try and attack Guantanamo.
Santiago screwed up because he broke the chain of command and that's what got his arse whipped. Not because he was a sub-standard Marine. If Santiago took his problem up the Chain he would be alive. He would have eventually become before Markenson and he would have solved it. Markenson knew Kendrick was poison as he was aware of the Curtis Bell incident. There's a good chance Markenson would have got him the transfer he wanted and more likely sent him to medical for additional test to see if he had a serious medical condition.
Even if Markenson would not have helped Santiago, he could have taken the matter directly to Jessup. It's assumed Jessup would have dressed him down and humiliated him but as Lee Corso says, "Not so Fast". If Santiago did it the right way and shown the freaking courtesy and respect then Jessup might have help him. When Santiago did a modern day "Snowflake Woke Maneuver" and blasted letters to everyone instead of taking his grievance up the chain of command was when the shite turned sideways. The Chain of Command is the cornerstone of the military way of life as anyone who has served knows.
I'll also add that if Santiago would have went up the chain to Markenson and Jessup, he would have a paper trail that he could have used in all of those letters he wrote trying to get out.

I am honestly confused as to why Santiago is such a poorly motivated Marine. As someone who has never served, do guys that pathetic make it through recruit training?
Yes. All the time. Most services have a term for them.
In the navy at my time they were “shitbags”....guys who struggled to meet minimum standards leading to others having to carry their slack

Air Force Vet here...Each branch has difference recruitment standard. It's a lot easier to get in to certain branches than others.

Would that not exclude him during recruit selection during physical examination, and if it was not picked up during initial physical examination, if it was detected later on, would it not have been an open and shut medical discharge?
It all depends. We had a recruit get through MEPS and boot camp with his left hand barely functional. Prior to joining he was a boxer and had multiple bones broken in that hand. Could not straighten his fingers. But he qualified on the range and could pass the PFT so he went through. But do to concerns with the use of his hand became a cook.

That depends on the issue. His mental state at the time of the situation may not have anything to do with his ability and service prior to being assigned to Gitmo.
Lets look at a few facts here. Lets assume this movie took place in real time. Meaning the movie came out in 1992. So the early 90s being stationed there. They had no internet, no cell phones, and were not allowed things like video consoles. There was also no cable TV on the base, but could pick up 1 or 2 channels from Miami with one being in Spanish. No streaming either and the same for radio as most stations were in Spanish except I believe one was in French(IIRC).
Social life did not exist. There was no leaving base at all. The only way out of Gitmo was maybe a few planes that came each month. Maybe changed now but back then one had to be in military required clothing at all time. Again possible changed currently but then there was also no females on the base. Even devil docs and other navy medical personal were male.
Gitmo by far during my time had to be the worse possible duty station for a marine. We always joked about the Stumps but that had more to do with being in the middle of the desert and the great Lake Bandini.
I was never stationed at Gitmo but did a layover due to a storm while making a rendition run once. I have never in my life see so many unhappy marines.

Col. Jessup is a classic example of absolute power corrupting absolutely.
He was in the right about a lot of things and he knew it. He also knew nobody on that base, or really in the United States government or military would frick with him. So when he felt vindicated about something, he’d use corrupt means to prove his point, including putting two of his own Marines in for life for crimes he ordered them to commit.
Jessup could’ve been a good man and a great officer if he had been about one or two more rungs down the ladder. Some men just shouldn’t be leaders.

You think I can't subpoena Markinson?
Capt. Ross:
You won't find him. Do you know what Markinson did for his first 17 of his 22 years in the Marines? Counterintelligence. Markinson is gone. There is no Markinson.
This bit and Kaffee's reaction got my juices flowing.
