Sebastian Shaw, the actor who played Anakin was born in 1905! That means he was 78 freaking years old in Jedi which means he was 50 years older than he should have been. The burns don't excuse that. In fact he was 9 years older than Alec Guiness.

Idris Elba.
He was clearly the best actor for the role

Yeah but he's black.

I'm sure the age blunder is why Lucas replaced him with the young Hayden.

I think maybe Corey Stoll
or Stanley Tucci
Tucci is old for it but looks good for his age and Vader has suffered a lot of trauma that would prematurely age anyone to boot.

Wouldn't matter who played him. The Lucasian dialog was so bad that nobody could have pulled it off.
15 seconds of corny dialog.
Scene swipe.

Jonathan Brandis auditioned for the role in episode II a year or two before he committed suicide. Not sure he would have been any better than HC, though.

Ryan Phillipe was the runner up to Hayden.

I wish Michael Fassbender was more well known back in the day, since he would have been perfect for Vader. Heath Ledger would have been a good choice as well.

With Lucas' dialogue, I don't think it mattered who played Anakin.

What the hell was wrong with "Tell your sister you were right about me"?

I agree. Just trying to picture my perfect version of the prequels. They are just so frustrating to think about. The Clone Wars at large were a horrible idea. Here are the combatants: non-self aware droids vs mass produced clones, and no one really seems affected by all this. They should have had the clones be Uruk Hai like monsters, had them actually invade Courusant, and made the Stormtroopers be innocents who were forcibly drafted.
Also Owen and Beru they really fricked up. The original trilogy it seems to imply that Anakin and Owen knew each other well. The line of dialog "Luke's just not a farmer, Owen. He has too much of his father in him." just doesn't make sense from what we know in the prequels. With the prequels in mind, Owen's response instead of "That's what I'm afraid of" should have been "Oh, you mean that psychopath that stopped by our house for a day and murdered dozens of women and children. You think Luke has that in him? Are you insane?"

While there's nothing wrong with the line, Luke and Leia being siblings was the first real sign of Lucas slipping. No way that was planned out even in The Empire Strikes Back.

It wasn't planned. Originally, the saga was envisioned as 9 films. Luke kills Vader in 6 then the sequel trilogy would have been about Luke searching for his sister and killing the Emperor. Lucas just condensed it into one film.

I'd suggest forgetting the stupid prequels and enjoying the original films for what they are. I feel bad for you if you think of prequel Anakin when watching Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back.

They are some sort of farmers on a hot arse planet with tons of sand. Have you seen middle aged middle easterners? They look weather beaten as hell too.

Ryan Phillipe was the runner up to Hayden.
Jonathan Brandis would have been pretty bad too, but at least he might still be alive.

It was Hayden, Ryan, and Paul Walker in the final three. Walker would have been hilariously bad.

Darth Vader: Luke... help me take this mask off.
Luke: But you'll die.
Darth Vader: Nothing... can stop that now. Just for once... let me... look on you with my own eyes.
Anakin: Now... go, my son. Leave me.
Luke: No. You're coming with me. I'll not leave you here, I've got to save you.
Anakin: You already... have, Luke. You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister... you were right.
Luke: Father... I won't leave you.
Anakin slowly dies.
That is far from "so bad". It's a pretty solid father son scene, where the son is watching the father die and coming to grips with that.
