I agree--I don't think that people care so much more about animal characters than human characters (especially when both are personally unknown to the viewer), but you see human deaths so much more in movies that it's become very commonplace.

Also, the writers/directors often seem to make the scenes showing animal deaths in a way to evoke emotion from you, dragging the scenes out to get a reaction. In violent movies where there are multiple human deaths, it seems like the death scenes are shorter--"Oh, he's dead now too"--so it doesn't matter to you as much.

It is a moral and religious discussion by nature. The thread's topic is a way of saying, Which do you value more: animal life or human life? Peter Singer would be proud of many of the opinions in this thread.

it isn't as black and white as that. In movies I do value animal lives and childrens lives over others in movies. In life however it's different. There are very different circumstances.

There's a difference between fiction and reality.

I'm less convinced there is in this matter. Why? Because I see first hand, every day, how people do value animals more than people. Many pets receive far more attention than the "undesirable" people in our society. Animal abuse is sometimes more harshly punished than assault. Services to pamper and care for animals increase exponentially while the budgets of charities to help the poor shrink.

I am more likely responding in this thread to my dissatisfaction with that reality than to the words of the posters in the thread. Nonetheless, the reality of what I see and the confession that many people mourn the deaths of animals more than people in movies lead me to be concerned about how we view the value of human life.

No. It was a title that was easily twisted for someone wanting to troll. Everyone else but you read this thread title "do you get sad when animals die in movies?". It was as plain as that. It was a perfectly fine thread until you dropped in. You have your own movie review thread where you can turn everything in to a religious discussion. Don't ruin other people threads by sparking a religious debate.

Most of them do as you say

but even when an animal death happens where the viewer hasn't seen the animal in the whole movie (for me atleast) is still tough to watch. The only time it wasn't bad was in boondock saints.

This is one of the worst threads I've read in the past 30 minutes, for sure. At least top 3.

We had troll guy, "Why do you care what the troll says" guy, and "This thread blows and I'm better than all of you" guy all within three pages. That last guy was pretty poignant with his disconnected and condescending comments, though.

Leave it to TulaneLSU to totally not get the point of this thread and completely derail it.

Why do I doubt you have recently volunteered your time for the "undesired"?

I really dont think anyone here, despite what they claim, would value animal life over human life. But i think we all have a stronger reaction to the death of an animal because animals, like children, have no choice in their fate. If the horse dies in a battle, ultimately it was man's choice that caused his death (the horse bieng put there by man). thats a lot tougher to accept than an adult who dies, for whatever reason, as adults have free will and cognative reasoning. they can make decisions to save themselves. Kids/animals can't
