Robert Redford above all you dumbasses.

Recognizable?
Any list without Clark Gable is garbage. He inspired Bugs Bunny, for crying out loud.

I suggest Sean Connery and Morgan Freeman

There is so much fail in this thread, it is both funny and sad. The original list is pretty good, I would probably have Gable and Bogart over Cary Grant and maybe Kate Hepburn over Crawford.

I know. My list is literally the only one worth any shite in regards to the actual question posed.
Go find 10 random people on the street and show them these 2 pics and ask for a name. I'd bet my left nut 10/10 get Downey and less than 5 get Gable

Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne are #1 and #2.
For females, to me the first ones that come to mind or Katherine Hepburn, Natalie Wood, and Bette Davis. Not a fan of Julia Roberts, but she's probably Top 5 too.

Arnold Schwarzenegger
Has to be on the list.
I would say replace Chaplin. Here is why. Recognizable implies actors who the most people would recognize. Chaplin was incredibly famous for his time. However, Schwarzenegger would be recognizable to more people than anyone on that list, other than Wayne. The rest of the list would be higher up than Chaplin too.
i think the original list is pretty good, and john wayne is the #1 all time male movie "star", but i agree that at this point in time schwarzenneger and cruise have to be on the list. i'd definitely take cary grant off the list first. not sure if i would remove stewart, eastwood or chaplin next. chaplin is the most iconic and unique looking, stewart is arguably the most beloved actor of all time, and eastwood's fame has spanned 3 generations. in terms of recognizable, stewart is probably the least of the 3.
James Dean just misses the cut.
