My coworker brought this up today. I don't know if I'd put it at #1, but it would definitely make my top 10, if not top 5. It's a wonderful film. I thought this would make for a good discussion. What does the M/TV board think?

Whiplash was a great movie. It’s hard for me to say it’s the best though.

Top Tier, yes, easily. Or, yes an argument can be made.

I am always hesitant to label a number 1 of anything.

It's top 5.

I would put Ex Machina in front of it.

The Grand Budapest Hotel would have to be in the discussion.

Would probably make my top 5 out of the movies I've seen come out since 2014. Need to rewatch.

LINK

This site attempts to rank the top 1,000 21st Century Movies. Link is to it's sortable table of that ranking. Their highest ranked movies to come out in that timeframe are:

40. Boyhood
49. Mad Max: Fury Road
75. Moonlight
84. Carol
97. Grand Budapest Hotel

Whiplash is No. 251. Whiplash > Boyhood, IMO. Plenty of my favorites are too low or unranked, just a tool I sometimes use for recommendations.

If that’s true than that site is trash and should be ashamed of itself

I haven't watched it yet...shame.
But I was watching something here recently that showed the last scene, I guess where the kid is performing.
Is the whole movie that intense?
