This site attempts to rank the top 1,000 21st Century Movies.

To be clear, they've created this list by compiling hundreds of critics', websites' and filmmakers' lists. They update it annually. Like any such list, it's great to use as a tool to see what films are talked about. It's not attempting be a film canon for the 21st century. I occasionally watch films that end up on that list, especially if they did not necessarily look interesting to me upon release.

Knowing how it's compiled, I'm not at all surprised to see Boyhood and Mad Max near the top. I'm more surprised by Carol, which was fine.

I like Whiplash a lot, though it wouldn't rank near the top of my list for films released in the past five years. I have it as the 10th best of 2014, a year with a large handful of films I really liked.

I should have changed my wording. It’s one of the best, but hard for me to say it IS the best.

Sicario
Hell of High Water
Mad Max
Ex Machina
Whiplash
Gone Girl

These are my favorites of the last 5 years and it’s a god damn shame there arent. We need another year like 2007 in movies. The GOAT year of film.

Right, thats why I think of it as the most comprehensive ranking I know of. And yes, not surprised that Boyhood and Mad Max are the highest ranked of the subject timeframe.

2014 was loaded. Edge of Tomorrow - John Wick - Grand Budapest Hotel - Nightcrawler - Gone Girl - It Follows - Boyhood - A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night - Inherent Vice - Birdman et al

*movies in bold would all be in my top 10 of last 5 years.

Whiplash, to me, is one of the greatest movies ever. It is in my top 5 favorite flicks.

City of God
Godfather II
Ex Machina
Whiplash

That’s a good start to my list.

Not everyone appreciates the brilliance of Wes Anderson. It's okay bud. What's your pick?

While we're here, what stock do you place in IMDB ratings--whether user or critic?

Id have Isle of Dogs and Moonrise Kingdom ahead of The Grand Budapest Hotel if we are ranking his movies this century. Isle of Dogs would probably be in my top 10 for the century.

Based on the amount of super hero films on IMDB's Top250, and how that list usually has on it 5-6 films at a time from a current year, I give IMDB no stock. Voters there tend to rate anything broadly emotional very highly. Case in point: I just watched Capernaum, a recent Oscar nom for foreign language film that currently has an 8.5 at IMDB. It had a redundant and useless courtroom framing device, incompetent camera work, and tries to substitute misery for a narrative. But it has a "rah-rah" ending and a cute child performance. I gave it a 3/10.

The IMDB Top250 is full of crap like this, as well as untouchable and amazing classics.

I thought Whiplash was good, but not great. It didn't quite live up to the hype for me.

I'll chime in with an unpopular opinion...

I think Whiplash is overrated. It has a lot of great qualities of film, but there are also quite a few moments that for me that don't fit and are contrived. But I understand the appreciation.

Ex Machina, as listed often in previous posts, would be my go to here. It's absolutely remarkable. Dialogue, narrative, visual, concept, etc.
