Two movies I watched recently that I thought were better than the books were Cloud Atlas and Life of Pi.

Cloud Atlas streamlined most of the major plot points from the book.

Life of Pi's ending was more emotional than the book, even though it was almost the same.

The Godfather. I remember reading a lengthy passage in the book about Lucy Mancini's enormous vagina, no joke. It was a pretty trashy novel.

Shawshank Redemption, even though I liked the book a lot.

This cuts me deep.

In all seriousness, I have to agree. In that same thread as good as Stand by Me was to read, the movie was that much better as well.

The Body was one of the first books that I really got into deeply and I have pretty strong feelings about it. So even though I like Stand By Me, I lean towards the book. Obviously someone with a more objective opinion may differ, my judgement on that one is definitely biased.

Different Seasons all together is probably one of my favorite writings by him. Apt Pupil is the opposite for me though, in that the novella was far better than the movie.

I think I only read The Body and Shawshank. I know I started Apt Pupil, but never finished it. I never got into his horror stuff. I liked The Running Man, The Long Walk, and Rage (which is no longer published since Columbine). Looking at his bibliography, I haven't read a King book published after I was born.

I haven't seen the movie yet though I will when it makes it to Netflix. The book was one of the most critically acclaimed I can remember and I thought it was pretentious as hell and over-hyped. It's a tough concept to translate to film and it's good to see a couple of opinions on here that it worked out.

no. I love the movie. Absolutely love it. But the book is probably one of the greatest pieces of literature in the late-20th century.

Lost World book as also phenomenal. More action packed, and less message driven, but great. If only they would have followed the book for the movie.

The raptor/motorcycle chase in the book was one of the most intense chapters I've ever read. Shame they decided to keep it out of the movie so they could have the gymnast scene and the San Diego version of King Kong.

The Count of Monte Cristo

Deliverance was just as good if not better.

The first Twilight movie was 100 times better than the book. If the movie makes you cringe, the book would make you want to punch kittens.

WTF? The movie was mediocre. The book is a classic. I'm guessing you've never read the book.

This was my first thought... the book is completely forgettable and really exaggerates his exploits WAY past the point of even being remotely plausible.

Maybe. Reading the book helped me understand the movie better. The movie is arguably the best science fiction movie ever. The book really isn't close to being the best science fiction novel.

No. Although I enjoyed the movie, Kubrick cutting off the end of the book was a mistake in my opinion.
