The Wire, easily. It's a masterpiece.
How is this even a competition?

I always viewed The Shield as a network-friendly The Wire knockoff. . .but they only focus on the cops, rather than the entire city.

As good as The Shield was, The Wire had waaaay more fleshed out and compelling characters on all sides of the law.

Also has one of the great anti-heroes in television history:

It's funny that some of you harp on The Shield for being network friendly, it's not like it was on FOX.

The show depicted a main character being orally raped at gunpoint and at least two times it showed actual jizz on screen. The show was known for going past the line.

Shield debuted three months before the wire, not sure how that’s a knockoff

I have watched The Wire 6 times.

But now I will be watching The Shield...I've never seen one episode.

How does The Sheild hold up to Homicide:Life on the Street?

Lmao. You found McNulty, the walking drunk Irish cop stereotype, more compelling than Shane Vendrell?

Criminal/ street wise, yes I agree, the wire was powerful and fascinating whereas in the shield it was really just background . Cop wise, it doesn’t hold a candle to the Shield’s human drama. Seasons 4-7 of the shield was the best dramatic television I’ve ever seen. Nothing comes close to matching the intensity of it.

I didn’t get this criticism either. Any time I saw it I was wondering, “have you actually seen The Shield?”

I want to again reiterate that I think The Wire is one of the best shows period ever aired on television. I have rewatched it perhaps six or seven times. But The Shield is probably 1a/1b with The Sopranos for my favorite. Which is to say I have rewatched both like ten times each.

The Wire is Dickensian. It builds an absurdly well-fleshed out reality of a city and every one of its machines. If The Wire was a book, it would be big enough to kill someone with.

The Shield is Shakespearean. It is not interested in backstory or exposition, it gives very little detail to the past. It is fast, it is rapid, it wants to present major conflicts and resolve them. It is a five act play.

Neither make one better than the other, but it's an insane comparison in spite of the fact both aired around the same time and focus around crime/police.

I wouldn't give the world for the other, I am glad to have both. I love The Wire for being a world of detail and nuance, and I love The Shield for being incredibly true to plot and story and giving an incredibly breakneck thrill ride that never once felt cheap.

McNulty sucked

The Wire had 5 guys at least as interesting and compelling as Shane.

Don't ask me how, but I have never seen even one episode of the Shield until last night. After reading this thread I realized it is on Hulu and I am officially on a 1st time ever binge watch. Did the first three episodes last night and it seems to me like Detective Vic Mackey is going to be a problem for many.

Oh I see now. You haven’t actually watched the Shield in its entirety. No need to waste any further time discussing with you.

It actually is - sort of:

Homicide: A Year On the Killing Streets by David Simon

Really good read but also really dark.

The Wire easily.
But The Shield is really good just doesn’t go as far and with as many different perspectives as Wire.

Bubbles,

Bubbles was the worst character in the show. I was hoping they'd kill him off sooner. McNulty was a prick but at least it was comedy. Bubbles was just a junkie.
