Love both but I think over the long haul American Pie is just the 90s Porkys and Superbad is closer to a Ferris Buehler in terms of cultural impact
I think the biggest issue with AP as far cultural significance is that there were lot of high school themed movies around that time. She’s All That, Varsity Blues, AP, Not Another Teen Movie (which parodied all them). So they kind of blend together.
Superbad came out in 2007 where they didn’t have much competition with other movies of that genre. Hollywood had stopped making them. So I think it stands out.
As for cultural impact, I’d put Superbad and Mean Girls ahead of AP. I just think AP comes off as generic.
And I have liked most of the Judd Apatow universe of movies. Most of the actors he uses “pops”. Whereas with AP, the only iconic character is Stifler.

AP had more humor geared toward the tween/teen crowd…plus boobs so yes junior high me loved it, haven’t watched in a while but I doubt much would still make me laugh
Superbad still holds up and I can laugh anytime I watch it

I actively wanted Jonah Hill’s character to get hit by a bus.

We are the same age. And I completely agree. American pie was a must watch for us. And the “one time… band camp” line along with tits, MILF, etc. it was a very good watch. But the humor doesn’t last. It was more campy than real lol humor. Superbad is a true rewatch that doesn’t get awkward or old. It’s just a better movie.

Superbad is more believable and holds up better.

They are about even. They both had a huge cultural impact.

Superbad actually casted actors that looked like they could be in high school. I think that helped a lot with the authenticity. With AP, i mean Tara Reid had just played Bunny Lebowski the year before. Shannon Elizabeth was born in 1973. Not many 25 year olds in the Class of 99. Chris Klein and Sean William Scott both looked too old for high school IMO. I know their real ages werent that far out of HS, but to me the actors in Superbad looked the part of teenagers.
I also think Superbad benefits from basically 0 HS/college comedy movies being made in the last 20 years. It’s the last great one made, so maybe that even puts it higher than what it should be.
The 1980s was filled with iconic HS/college movies.
Then 98-07 (American Pie, Varsity Blues, She’s All That, Mean Girls, Road Trip, NATM, Euro Trip, Van Wilder, Superbad) was another golden era.
And that’s it…I guess Hollywood decided those movies werent worth being made. It kinda sucks for kids nowadays. Although I guess they can still watch stuff about the 90s/early 2000s and be entertained like I was watching Dazed and Confused set in the 70s.

American pie is better but it came out my senior year of hs.

They're was only one Superbad. They're like 6 American Pies. The second and reunion were pretty good.

Young Allison Hanigan wins.

More universal in my opinion. It had something for everyone, and it was able to cover all of the different types of relationships for 90s kids in like one film. Sort of brilliant in that respect. More relatable to a wider group of people.
Although I think Superbad is a more realistic representation of the average guy's high school situation. We all go through some serious awkwardness when we 1st start dating, but some of us have the game figured out before our senior year. The two main guys in Superbad acted like I did in 9th grade.
I relate even more to Dazed and Confused. I wasn't Randall Pink Floyd, but I was Don Dawson. I did flirt with teachers. I was funny and chicks dug me. They had a good time with me. I had lots of good friends. I was fun to be with.
The main guys in Superbad, who were graduating seniors, were more awkward than the freshman kids in Dazed and Confused.
Is that really the way it was for most senior kids, or just the ones that played Dungeons and Dragons?
How did we regress to guys being that awkward as seniors? When will the worm turn back to when life was good for young, healthy people?

American Pie. Superbad was absolute garbage. I've yet to figure out what made that movie so popular.

Tough one for sure.
American Pie is more iconic but Superbad was more fun and crazier.
Pie by a hair and also the Shannon Elizabeth scene. But I really think Superbad.

How did you movie nerds miss Can’t Hardly Wait?

Superbad was definitely a HS nerd turned cool movie, more like Weird Science than AP. Which made it funnier. But not quite as appealing as a “cool” coming of age piece.

Superbad
I was a freshman at LSU when it released on DVD and watched it with a girl in her dorm. Got some nookie after. 10/10.
