To a degree, I agree with you, but the absolute shitfest that is currently being put out by these human hack writers isn’t exactly giving me confidence in their ability to respect source material.

Rings of Power is skating on appendix notes; there's a ton of leeway for interpretation there. And the producers were not allowed to use Silmarillion references, so they had to get creative.

1. Then don’t even try. They knew the limitations going in.

2. There’s so much lore bending & breaking that it’s damn near childish in how they tried to spin RoP. It’s so unrelated to and foreign to anything Tolkien wrote.

3. And yes, the race swapping was both absurd as much as it was unnecessary. Tolkien was very specific in what he was writing and why. The man more than anything knew what he was writing about. So why in the hell do we go from No multicultural elves, hobbits, and dwarves (books) to an array of them (RoP) , back to none again? (Every on-screen adaptation)

Stay focused, this is a Wheel of Time thread

And again, I am not defending Rings of Power, but that show was a significant bit better than Wheels of Time. Yes, the writing sucked for both, and some questionable casting issues. But RoP looked a lot better, and they also got a good composer in Bear McCready to put some decent music. And then the effects were solid. The orc prosthetics, the eagle and balrog scenes, so on.

Both shows were out of touch with society, yes.

It’s the ever present mindset we’re seeing today where those in control of IPs have deluded themselves into believing they can equal or surpass the works of those who came before them.

It's true and there's not a damn thing anyone can say to dispute it.

DV your little hearts out, it won't change a damn thing.

I suffered through WoT, I couldn't quit it because of my love of the books. Season 3 was an improvement from the basement garbage the show was in, in seasons 1 and 2. I just wish these big wigs would stop trying to add their own spin or modernize it and just give us the source material we actually want, they could make all kinds of money and get lots of praise, but apparently they don't want that at all.

As somebody who never read the books, I was a casual viewer of the show. Never really thought the show and/or storylines were great but wanted to finish what I started.

Will I still have a positive experience reading the books after watching these 3 seasons lol?

And that's what drives them to put this stuff out. Generate lots of PR hype for an established IP with a good sized fan base, hook in adjacent fans and pray folks tune in and are completionist enough to ride out the rest of the series.

They assume folks will invest enough time initially that they'll feel obligated to ride it out.

Depends, it’s very high fantasy. Everybody’s different. But if you like to read, and like fantasy, I think you’d find them to be great reads, and would dislike the show even more. There are a lot of books, 3-4 of which can be slogs to get through (it’s actually referred to as the slog lol). But after those, Brandon Sanderson sticks the landing with the last few. Enjoy!

And looking up who this Rafe cat even is, anyone shocked that he's in a 'committed relationship' with one of the (male) actors on WoT?

Not surprising considering the changes he's made.

The show touched on some plot points. But the books are completely different from Rafe's nonsense.

For one, the world is diverse, but ethnically segregated. When Mat and Perrin travel, everyone knows they are Two Rivers folk. Aiel look the same, seanchan look the same, etc.

Thom is a far bigger deal.

Mat is the fricking man, and anyone who says otherwise is wrong, and probably hates Christmas and puppies.

Not as many gays as the show. Moiraine and Siuan did have a thing, but Moiraine gets sausage heavy later on.

Green Ajah are female piiiimps, and must be protected at all costs (my opinion)

Enjoy

Wasn’t it just alluded to in one statement though? I’ll be honest I didn’t even pick up on it when I read them. I just assumed they were “besties.” Without picking up on that one statement, it totally changes how you view their relationship. But in either case it doesn’t affect the plot either way.
