What's an appropriate age for Donnie Darko?

My 15 year old says they will be showing it in their drama class. First of all, it is rated R and I'm quite sure I could raise a stink over a teacher showing this movie to a 15 year old without a permission slip. I'm not going to, but I don't know what their teacher is thinking.

Anyway, it's on my Netflix, but I haven't seen it. The reason I'm really concerned is that I've seen it on here in those "Most F'd up movie" threads.

I'm not a Puritan, and I've allowed my kids to watch R rated movies before.

I saw it when I was 15 and I turned out alright.

Wrote a pretty good paper on it the next year for English class

Nothing explicit. and a really stupid movie.

We got our teacher to show us Braveheart in Highschool. That movie had much worse scenes.

i liked it, but not sure how a 15 year old would respond to it. might be over their heads

sounds like someone didnt get it.

i watched it when i was 15 or 16. they wont get it. nothing overtly bad. honestly, it would probably get a pg 13 rating today (with a little curving of some language).

its a great movie to watch at different ages in your life. you pick up different things.

They basically say the F word a few times.
There's a little obscured violence.

I honestly don't know why it's rated R.

It's just creepy, I guess.

F word likely made it rated R.

It is fine for most 15 year olds. Most won't get it though and be really confused.

He talks about Christina Applegates tits while jerking off in front of his psychiatrist.

That's the worst part.

I dont think I would have fully appreciated this movie at 15.

I don't really remember anything too bad

I know PBeard personally, and your son will turn into a lover of all things alternative and begin running all family pictures through a sepia filter.

I saw it for the first time around that age. Began questioning all things..

It's on there because it makes no fricking sense, not because it is graphic

Because Jake Gylennhal tells his droopy eyed sister to go "suck a frick" and then she asks "how do I suck a frick?"

Or is it the other way around?

He's 15 he'll be fricking within the year if he's not already. I don't think Donnie Darko is going scar him for life....
