I love the revisionist history on this board. When the Winter Soldier came out the reaction on here was "decent Marvel movie. Villian fairly weak". Over the years it has morphed into the superhero version of The Godfather or Citizen Kane.

Except only TDKR is seen as the #71 film of all time. But let's not hold that against it.

Let's see, Cap is still behind in votes, and most people in here put it equal with TDK AT BEST, not Citizen Kane, like TDKR. But yeah, let's complain about bias and unfair rating.

To be fair, people loved TWS upon release and there were probably more comparisons to TDK then. Most people give it credit for being the MCU "grown up," and that's been the case since release.

I absolutely loved Winter Soldier and it still remains my #2 MCU film behind only Iron Man. Go back to the original thread. I believe my review and grade are still there. I raved about it.

There is no revisionist history there. TDKR has been in the IMDB Top 250 since just after its opening weekend. It received an 'A' CinemaScore upon release and has a 90% audience score on RT (though it is true Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have higher audience scores). As I have said many times, people who disliked/hated The Dark Knight Rises are in a small minority (albeit very vocal).

Winter Soldier is actually my fav MCU film and perhaps one of my Top 5 comic movies.

It really made Cap America one of my fav characters partially cause it matched how I thought Cap should fight onscreen, after being letdown by First Avenger.

Plus Winter Soldier character was cool..although he has downgraded since then.

Hoping Falcon and Winter Soldier series gives him his true shine again.

IMDB ratings are dumb. It's teenagers that rate recent films so highly. I do agree with you about this board being in the minority though. TDKR was well received by audiences.

Oh ok, so you're going to tell me that Endgame, Black Panther and The Avengers are all better than TDK? Noted for later when you say TDK is the greatest comic book film of all time.

quote:

The Avengers : A+
Black Panther : A+
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse : A+
Avengers: Endgame : A+

Batman(1989) : A
Batman Begins : A
The Dark Knight : A
The Dark Knight Rises : A
Wonder Woman : A
Shazam! : A
X2 : A
Iron Man : A
Iron Man 2 : A
Iron Man 3 : A
Captain America: The Winter Soldier : A
X-Men: Days of Future Past : A
Guardians of the Galaxy : A
Big Hero 6 : A
Avengers: Age of Ultron : A
Ant-Man : A
Deadpool : A
Captain America: Civil War : A
Doctor Strange : A
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 : A
Spider-Man: Homecoming : A
Thor: Ragnarok : A
Avengers: Infinity War : A
Deadpool 2 : A
Captain Marvel : A
Spider-Man: Far From Home : A

RED : A-
Batman Forever : A-
Man of Steel : A-
The Lego Batman Movie : A-
Aquaman : A-
Blade : A-
X-Men : A-
Spider-Man : A-
Spider-Man 2 : A-
X-Men: The Last Stand : A-
The Incredible Hulk : A-
Captain America: The First Avenger : A-

Look at that, Winter Soldier and Civil War at an A. First Avenger at an A-. So 3 A's vs. 2 A's and an A-.

When considering Metacritic, TWS and CW are within points of TDKR and rated more highly than BB. The only real outlier is TDK. The gap is not far in terms of numbers, or not as far as you want. And Civil War has the highest box office.

I vote Cap, just barely, but I really enjoy cheesy Cap from the first avenger. WS and CW are both very solid. Rewatching all 3 is an easier watch than Nolan’s. I usually don’t rewatch TDKR when I watch the other two.

Eh, I wouldn’t say I hate or dislike it, but it is well over rated per those rankings. It doesn’t fit with the other two. I really like BB. Maybe a small minority of people hate it but I wouldn’t say it is a small minority of people who don’t find it to be a good movie for the franchise.

For me it’s easily Nolan’s Batman.

Winter Soldier was incredible, but if taken outside the context of the Marvel Universe and the Tony Stark story, the Captain America Trilogy kind of falls apart.

I don’t even consider it a trilogy. Just part of a much larger story.

The only point I was trying to make with the CinemaScore is that The Dark Knight Rises was well-liked by the movie-going audience, further reinforcing that those who disliked the film were in a small minority. If you want to play "gotcha" with the aforementioned films being rated higher than The Dark Knight then go right ahead.

I would put The Winter Soldier on par with both The Dark Knight Rises and Batman Begins so you'll get no argument from me in regards to that film's quality. I have said many times before (and once in this thread) that I absolutely loved that movie. I just feel that Batman Begins easily trumps Captain America: The First Avenger and The Dark Knight without question beats out The Winter Soldier. That's two victories out of three right there and I haven't even gotten to The Dark Knight Rises vs. Captain America: Civil War because I don't need to. The battle has already been won.

Also...it's very difficult to compare the two trilogies considering that The First Avenger, The Winter Soldier, and Civil War are part of a larger, overarching story. The Dark Knight trilogy are three films that tell a self-contained story from beginning to end. Whereas the Captain America trilogy requires you to view other movies from without that trilogy for you to have an understanding as to what's going on in either Winter Soldier or Civil War.

And Hamilton has been in the top 50 since its Disney+ release, and it's not even a movie.

If we accept the IMDB Top250 as something meaningful, we accept that Green Book is the 131st greatest movie of all time and Three Billboards is 152nd, while Chinatown is the 155th. These are the ratings of literal children.

If you live your life thinking TDK is the 4th greatest film ever made, Inception is the 13th, Interstellar is the 31st, and TDKR is really 71, that's fine. But these are not "common" opinions among many film fans.

Holy shite, The Prestige at 47 and Memento at 55. 6 in the top 75. There's something wrong with the imdb crowd.

Huh?

The first Captain America came out in 2011 and then Winter Soldier came in 2014.

But it proves that it's popular with mainstream audiences - just like The Dark Knight Rises was - which is all I am trying to say. My argument is that all three Nolan Batman films were critically acclaimed and almost universally loved by general audiences.

I couldn't care less what snooty film fans think on this matter, especially when it comes to Captain America vs. Batman. That's an argument most film fans wouldn't be bothered to engage in.

I actually agree with ALMOST every point you stated - thanks for saving my time

(EXCEPTIONS BELOW)

BB = GOAT
First 2/3's of TDK > WS
Last 1/3 of TDK <<<<<<<<<<< WS
Result TDK = WS
CW
FA

TDKR (absolutely terrible - at a parody level compared to BB)

In one sentence - the Batman trilogy fell off a cliff after the Joker was arrested while Captain America's quality peaked.

Aside from the CAP trilogies being more fun to watch and rewatch there's another few reasons the CAP trilogies were better....

CAP TRILOGIES:

Peggy Carter

Scarelt Witch

Black Widow

Batman:

Rachael Dawes

Cap easily

I don't get the love for BB. I thought it was kind of boring. Everything about the pit is just dumb.

If not for Ledgers Joker, this trilogy would have been average at best.
and to be clear, i still watch all three batman movies and enjoy them.

There's a big difference between the type of comic book character Batman is and Cap is. The comic aspect of Batman that you see in the movies is all the tech and gadgets he comes up with. With Cap, it's superhero feats of strength. Both excelled at showing that in their trilogies.

But when you look at Batman, his big thing is his tech, just like Iron Man, yet we get the Iron Man movies and i think most would agree that his tech he comes up with in the movies far outweighs anything Batman does, so it makes this Batman kinda dull looking back at it. It was great when it came out, but where we are currently with superhero movies, its really a bland comic book trilogy.

The experiment of doing an origin story set long before the events of the mcu. 2011 to 2019's Captain Marvel is almost a decade.
