I don't know if I could point to any one movie as my 'most' underrated, but off the top of my head I tried to think of a few generally underrated ones.

Event Horizon is WAY better than the 36% rating it has. Sam Neil was very memorable in it. I think it suffered a bit because people were expecting pure sci-fi and got something else with it. Apparently the studio cut a good amount of it, and a lot of people think a directors cut would really make it a classic sci-fi/horror film.

I think Shooter is better than the 47% critic rating it has on Rotten Tomatoes. 80% Audience Score kind of backs that up. Not a masterpiece by any stretch, but its entertaining and I love that Levon Helm is in it.

Tremors

I’m not even sure it’s underrated … but more people should see this movie… more often.

The dialogue is greater than the cast which is greater than the plot which is greater than the suspense/horror which is greater than the monster itself.

Love this movie

Leaning Ravenous..
but…
Running Scared with Paul Walker is a close second.

The Proposition
The Butterfly Effect

are all criminally underrated.

Basically if a movie has Guy Pearce, it has a 80/20 chance of being a good movie and underrated. Iron Man 3 accounts for 15 of that 20 percent.

Oh and shout out to Airheads, that’s a top 10 movie of all time for me. Feel like it’s a perfect snapshot of that time and funny as hell with a lot of comedic talent.

My answer for these threads is always:

Cadence (1990)

Charlie Sheen is a white soldier who is sent to a military prison and placed on an all black unit. Martin Sheen is the warden there, and is a great a-hole. A young Larry Fishburne (that’s what he is billed as) is one of the prisoners as well. The movie is about Charlie not fitting in and dealing with shite from that.

It is fricking EXCELLENT, yet nobody I talk to has ever really heard of it.

I know it was praised in its day, but I don't think Network gets enough consideration for greatest film of all time. Same notation for Sunset Boulevard. (ETA: Sunset Boulevard is #16 on AFI's Top 100, so I might be skewed on that...)

I'd love a Mystic River type movie.

Underrated a lot comes to mind. Underrated like Mystic River is a bit more difficult. Maybe Sleepers with DeNiro, Kevin Bacon, and Billy Crudup. Kind of has the same tragedy in the past really affects the present. Maybe Prince of the City with Treat Williams or At Close Range with Sean Penn and Christopher Walken. My favorite underrated movie is Thunderbolt and Lightfoot but that is not really like Mystic River.

This movie legit shook me. The scene with the couple at the apartment.

My nomination would be Unbreakable. It didn't get much fanfare at the time, and then it's been retconned a good bit, but when it came out, long before superhero oversaturation, it was brilliant.

Aside from that, I'll go Hostiles with Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike. One of my favorite westerns of all time, and it has half the planet in it.

It has a 64% non-critic/audience rating, which is the only thing I go by.

I always thought the Stoned Aged was just as good as Dazed and Confused but didn't get near the hype or praise.
