This guy must be curious why people still watch action movies too.
Thats all a superhero movie is anyway. Not many action movies out there being made that are that much better than the good superhero movie right now anyway.

You pretty much know the plot going in, superhero fights supervillain and almost inevitably wins.
So, like most westerns, war flicks, action movies, etc?

What is the continued appeal?
They're fun.

Westerns and comic-book movies might have similar themes and story concepts like super-hero movies but at least Westerns aren't total comic-book make believe stuff that has never ever ever ever nor will ever ever ever happen in reality.
Westerns happened, IRL.
Comic-books only exist in coloring books on a page...there's zero connection to reality like Westerns
Who goes to movies because they want to see real life?
I go to movies to precisely escape real life. For most people, that is the whole point of movies.

One of my all time favorites was the Sopranos. Week to week you never knew what was going to happen.
You thought you'd tune in one day and Tony and his family would all be dead and the show would continue?
It should've been clear from th before moment of the pilot episode that Tony and his family would he fine until the series finale. Which they were.

I just don't understand the appeal of t?h?e?s?e? ?m?o?v?i?e?s? stories. You pretty much know the plot going in, s?u?p?e?r?h?e?r?o? protagonist f?i?g?h?t?s? has a conflict with s?u?p?e?r?v?i?l?l?a?i?n? antagonist and almost inevitably wins.
ETA: still no support for strikethrough text? Why does it work on preview, but not on the actual post?

Everyone else has explained this, but let me also add that these movies have been wonderful bonding things for me and my two boys. I was born in 1970, so the only long running serialized type movies I had growing up were really Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Kids today, who are interested in long form stories, recurring characters, action movies, etc have this wonderful abundance in front of them. And in the case of these comic book movies, nearly all of them have tons and tons of backstory that can be found and researched and delved into in other sources. It's nearly and endless supply of entertainment. It's been great watching them watch these movies and catch the various Easter eggs and references to unseen characters or stories they read about in other places.
Now...if they're not your thing, so be it. But to act like they have no value is kind of missing the point entirely.

Because super hero movies are the only things worth watching in between the 4-7 good movies that come out each year. I'd rather watch spider man than an all female remake of Fight Club

So, even though there is debate to this day on the Sopranos finale, you knew from the very first episode he was gonna die in the finale?
Even though I hated the finale of lost, guess you knew how that was gonna end from the pilot as well?

I think after Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4 a year later, you'll see superhero films slowly die.
I enjoy them for the most part, but I think this is right. Infinity War and Justice League kind of feel like the culmination of a 10 year superhero movie run. If you've seen most of the Marvel movies, you're pot committed and want to see the current iteration through to the big payoff.

Because they're enjoyable movies?
Did you refuse to watch Rocky movies because everyone knew Rocky would win?
Did you ever go to a Schwarzenegger movie expecting Arnie to die in it?
If this occurs, you should see an eye doctor, not blame the movie. ;p

Rocky didn't win in all of the movies. He lost in the original. Then he won in 2, 3 and 4. 5 was a little different. And he lost in 6 (Balboa). I would argue the two best Rocky films are the two where he loses.
Fun fact: Rocky was 3-3 in featured professional fights from the movies. 1-1 each vs Creed and Lang. Win vs Drago and loss to Dixon.
I love superhero origin movies when done well. I think it's cool to watch the hero get his powers and experiment and learn to use them. Follow ups are more hit and miss with me. I loved the original Spiderman with Tobey, but didn't care much for the next couple. But then I loved Batman Begins as well as the rest that followed.

how about you just say you don't like them? Which is fine, but your reasoning is shite

That's because people are stupid as shite.

He didn't die in the finale. And even if he did, you knew he wasnt going to die until the last episode because that's how the show works. And no matter what situation he and his family found themselves in episode to episode in the end it would a work out because that's the show. Your comparison to the Sopranos and assertion that the Sopranos had no linear plot devices or recycled TV nonsense is asinine.

Rocky lost. That's why it's one of the greatest movies of all time. It's about the underdog and the lesson is that life is about the journey not the destination

What's the continued appeal of the romantic comedy? The horror film? The western? Etc.?
Character faces situation/enemy/obstacle/journey. Character makes it through said situation/enemy/obstacle/journey. Or not.
Yeah. Aristotle said there are 2 stories ever told: comedy and tragedy. Even taking more modern thinking, there are between 2 and I think 60 or so archetypical storylines. You have seen and read them all. From the revenge thriller to the man versus nature drama to the boy meets girl romantic comedy, you've seen it all. You even know the basic structure of the plot. You can probably predict the end to 90% or more of all of the movies produced every year.
So why go see any movie? Why read any book? All fricking pointless. They do nothing besides tell the same story over and over again. They don't explore humanity, provide catharsis, or do anything beyond just tell a bland story that's been seen a thousand times. We should just read history books. Right? O wait... 90% of those are stories about men or entities facing adversity and overcoming it... Hmmmmm. I guess we should all just die. Yep. That's the answer.
