If you are aiming for the barn, you might miss the barn. If you are aiming for the door on the barn, you will hit the barn.

If you want to hit a target, don't aim at the entire target. Pick a small point to hit. When firing a gun at a person, you aim center chest... don't just look at the person.

Aim precisely, so when you miss you still hit the larger target.

I always thought it was sort of dumb too, TBH

Dumb? It's a well-known shooting cliche taught everywhere.

The logic makes sense, but how that explanation comes from that phrase makes no sense.

Edit: I don’t mean your explanation doesn’t make sense, it does, I’m saying why make the phrase “aim small, miss small” and not just “shoot em in the chest” or something. I’m sure there’s some origin out there.

Not sure how that makes it not-dumb.

Within the context of the movie, the boys are good, practiced shots. I don't think that mantra makes a lot of sense to them at that point.

I see what y'all are saying...

I think it's simply something to keep them focused as they kill people instead of thinking about killing people. It's kind of a fricked up scene when you think about how easily they do it.

If you aim at a small target, you have to really focus, so even if you miss, you probably won't miss by very much (maybe a half inch or inch).

If you aim at a larger target and aren't very careful with the aim, your margin of error grows exponentially - you may miss your target by feet.

Aim small = aim at a button on the Redcoat, not just the soldier.

Miss small = less of a chance of missing completely

That scene was awesome.

Step 2

“I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I aim with my eye.

I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I shoot with my mind.

I do not kill with my gun; he who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father.
I kill with my heart.”

As everyone else said; you aim for the man and miss, you miss the man. You aim for a button on the man's shirt and miss the button, you hit the man.

It is used in golf too. Don’t aim in the fairway...pick a spot in the fairway. Give yourself a small target.

They're good practiced shots shooting at targets and game. Shooting men who shoot back is much more stressful and dangerous. Their Dad was steadying them for the chaos and killing to come by reminding them of what's the simple first principle of aiming, what's true, and what's familiar.

I always thought it was the opposite. If you aim small (for example the head) then you will miss small as so many things involving shooting a target are variable and too small of a target makes it more difficult to hit the what you're targeting.

PJinATL said it best

It’s an effective means of teaching the importance of knowing where your sight is as you pull the trigger.

It works. I won a long distance archery shoot years ago. We did not know the distance and each attempt (arrow) cost a buck. Target was a dollar bill pinned to a stack of high density styrofoam blocks roughly 6’X6’ The closest to George Washingtons nose won the pot. I took home the $287 pot after shooting my 8 th arrow. Top edge of my arrow was touching the top of GW’s upper lip, roughly 1/16” from the tip of his nose.

No biggie....right?

The dollar was 106 yds away.....

Aim small.....miss small.

But isn’t that obvious? Is a dedicated saying needed? If you were trying to shoot a dollar bill over hundred yards away, wouldn’t you aim at what you were shooting for? Instead of just shooting in the general direction?
