He mentions thinking he was going to hunt dingos. But certainly a mercenary sort like him wouldn’t react the way he did.

It's a movie. And an underrated one too.

And why not??? He was a honorable man who was opposed to sniping human beings at the behest of a greedy landowner who thought his priorities were more important than human life. I see no issue with his reaction.

Right.....
But my first reaction when I hear sharpshooters is sniping people
There were e fire gags in the old west aimed over sniping cattle rustlers.
Even if he was honorable and didn’t want to do it, I’d think they’d find the concept at least a familiar concept to not overreact

God, I was just thinking about this movie the other day watching Love Actually.
The birth of Hans Gruber.
Laura San Gia-whatever had some serious sweater-puppies from her Just Shoot me days:

That’s a horrible haircut for women in general.

Live on a famous author’s spacious estate, solve a few crimes, feed Zeus and Apollo when Higgins is away. He expected a sweet gig.

Laura San Giancoma was a looker in her day, but she didn't age well, like Marisa Tomey has for example.
I saw LsG in a made for TV movie about 3 years ago and she looks OLD.

She was pretty hot in The Stand IIRC, at least until she took it from Flagg in demon form. Not so much after that.

I have contacted the authorities. Please prepare for their arrival.
