I recently gave this film another shot after viewing it once many years ago.

IMO...

What is this film but for a movie that attempts to be a masterpiece probing the deep conflict between dark desire and responsible conscience but instead is nothing more than a shallow observation of bored, self engrossed people trifling a dalliance into self indulgence, portrayed with stunted acting and a wandering, aimless story?

Like all Kubrick movies, its not something you watch on the surface level.

Possibly in the credits?

Stanley Kubrick is the most overrated director in American cinema history.

Bro, do you even Illuminati?

Seriously, though, the film is about everything under the surface, not what you're seeing.

There's tons of breakdowns and vidoes on the film, nearly as many as The Shining. Go down the rabbit hole.

It's alsi incredibly shot like every Kubrick film.

I understand the secret society aspect.

It just came across as silly in the film to me.

I often wonder what Kubrick could have done with the film "Dune" back in the 80s.

I liked it as is, just feel at that time in 1984..Stanley Kubrick or Ridley Scott would have created something more than just unique.

The biggest question on the film has always been the 20-24 minutes cut from the final version, and Kubrick's ultimate vision/statement/message.

It's a masterpiece of production design and scoring, if nothing else

There is an outstanding Kubrick documentary on Amazon Prime that delves deeply into it. If your genuinely curious I highly recommend it.

Yes sir I do.

“The Mysterious Work of Stanley Kubrick”
It’s on Amazon Prime and it’s 46 minutes well spent.

I watched it back in my middle school days thinking a movie about a sex cult would provide a lot of material to work with.

Was quite the surprise.

Yeah it's a great bait and switch.

It looks like a slick erotic thriller but it's actually about how sex in the real world can be anything but sexy. There's jealousy, aids, a man pimping out his underage daughter, a prostitute on heroin, ludicrously mechanical fricking at the secret society shindig, a marriage on the verge of collapse and the punchline in the end is despite all this Nicole Kidman says they should go home and frick.

The cut a lot out of that movie that would have helped it make more sense.
