How was Vince Vaughn?

In my opinion this was his best role ever. Played it really well.

You ever seen The Lost World: Jurassic Park 2?

I actually agree though, Vaughn was good in it. Impressive battle scene in the second half of the movie. As another poster said, I was getting a Forrest Gump vibe from Garfield's performance before he enlist, then he does well when things get serious with the court marshall.
When they play a clip of the real guy at the end it goes a long way towards explaining garfield's accent.

That depends on the environment. It was still done during that time frame

Garfields accent was simply terrible

Seriously? He's interviewed at the end of the movie, that is his accent. I thought Garfield did a terrific job in the movie. Vince Vaughn is not someone I've ever cared for but I thought he did well.

On the other hand I did think the battle scenes were over the top. It seems like every war movie that comes along has to try to top the previous one in body count, blood, and grotesqueness. That aside, it was still a very good movie.

To be fair, a movie about a medic in the army is going to be, and probably should be, a bit graphic.

Same here. Not the "grotesqueness" as much as the people spinning and flying every time a bomb went off. Not saying it's physically impossible, but they made it seem like every explosion sent a ninja into some backflip fit. It was good outside of that.

The battle scenes were intense but I kept wanting to yell 'spread the frick out' the whole time.
No trained soldiers would spend that much time bunched up in battle.

Amen! Drives me nuts in war movies when they do this. One Japanese with a Nambu and full clip* could take out the entire unit with one burst.

If this movie was written as fiction and put on film it would have bombed because no one would have been able to get past such a ridiculous plot line.

I highly recommend it.

It really happened.

Yeah

After infantrymen, medics were the highest casualties and recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

I was once an Army medic, I need to see this movie soon.

accent

I'm the worst armchair accent critic, and while it wasn't great, after a while I got used to it. To his credit - where every other actor goes Lynchburg for any southern role - in this case it was the right direction with Doss being a Virginian.

And holy shite what a story, Gibson was the right guy to tell it.

Why can't people figure out he wasn't going for a "type" of accent, he was trying to copy Doss himself and by all accounts he was pretty spot on

Great battle scenes but someone previously nailed it when they said the first half was like Walk Hard. It was way too cheesy and over the top. Garfields acting was horrible

Great battle scenes though. Vaughn did very well

I'd compare it to Pearl Harbor, which I greatly enjoy. You're not going to have anyone say it's GOAT status, but it is a legitimately good and noteworthy presentation

I thought he was the weakest part of the movie. I didn't believe him as a drill sergeant one second. It looked like Vince doing a bad R. Lee Ermey impression at times. It just smelled of stunt casting to me.

Yes, and in fact his heroism was significantly toned down in the movie because it seemed too unbelievable, even though it is true.

I loved this movie . something felt off with Vince as the drill Sargent

the beginning was a little forest Gump but when I saw the real person it made more since

an amazing act of heroism.

Uh the Nambu was a pistol not sure about the "burst". Training was to not group up under fire but human nature is to get close when feeling threatened. The point I found unbelievable was when he batted the grenade out of the air.

I enjoyed it.

But I was bothered at the beginning of the first battle when that guy pics up a torso, uses it as a shield, and hip fires his weapon as he mows down like 5 Japanese soldiers. That just seemed video gameish to me or something you'd see out of an early 2000s war film.

Ummmmmm, no. "Nambu" also referred to several types of Japanese machine guns.
