Theaters finally got a much-needed shot in the arm this weekend, with Disney/Pixar delivering a bonafide smash in the form of Inside Out 2, whose $155M debut take represents a comeback for the 2024 box office as well as for Pixar as a blue chip brand. Previous weekend champion Bad Boys: Ride or Die served as a solid counter-programming option, enjoying a mild drop in its second weekend and further boosting the summer movie season after a sputtering start. Overall the box office was up +25.8% over the same weekend last year, when WB’s The Flash and Pixar’s Elemental both underperformed compared to industry expectations.

I think this weekend's performance shows a few things:
1) People still want to go to the movies. The idea that they are afraid of going because of COVID is bullshite. The streaming excuse holds water in certain situations but people still want to get out of the house. Especially parents with young kids. Plenty of Moms and Dads are beyond ready to get their kids to the theater for a couple hours so they can have a mental break during the summer.
2) People want to see good movies. The studios have put out alot of crap the last few years. Make a film the people want to see and they come out in droves.
3) Stop being political in every mainstream film. People want to be entertained not indoctrinated. This isn't hard. And if you do have to make a statement, learn the art of being subtle.
Hopefully the studios can build on this and learn the right lessons goign forward.

There are people still saying this?

I still think people are only going to see “event films”
I think covid just made people realize that only some movies are worth seeing in theatres.
Inside Out was an insanely popular movie and sequels do well.

Absolutely. Disney has been pushing it non stop to explain their past PIXAR failures, Hopefully with this success they will shut up about it.

it definitely effected some of those movies.
2020-2021 were pretty rough years for movies but there was a solid bounce back in 2023. not quite the heady days of 2019. I dont see the Jumanji sequel making 800 million in today’s market.

Remember when you said that Lightyear only bombed because Father’s Day was an unpopular movie weekend, despite Pixar premiering most of its movies on Father’s Day throughout the years?
