What did yall think of this? Watched it last night and halfway through I thought it was an amazing premise.

The third act fell off for me and then it just randomly ended after a brief wrap up. It had so much more potential with the background of the aunt and what happened after everything ended.

Also why the F would a family just let some random lady stay with them for a month when both said they didn’t know if she was family or not. Far fetched

What say you?

It was an aunt that they hadn’t seen in a while.

I deduct 2 points from the final score for the answer being "magic and witchcraft". If they could have made it all happen within the bounds of reality it would have been much better/more satisfying. Also the images of a clown and not the aunt was a cheat.

Pop-horror has a problem of not committing to the horror and Weapons is the worst recent example, with its very meh ending (for a fan of horror).

Modern horror, generally has a huge ending problem.

The movie was also just nonsnese. From my post in the big thread.

quote:

The issue is that there is a lot of nonsensical stuff you just have to not think about to make it work. Movie logic stuff. That's an entirely different discussion than use/delivery of exposition/explanation.

This movie has issues with both over-explaining and nonsensical plot aspects that you just have to not think about too much.

Ignoring the nitpicky stuff (like dumbest police/town on earth), just revisit the opening narration.

quote:

This is a true story. It happened right here in my town two years ago. A lot of people die in a lot of really weird ways in this story, but you’re not gonna find it in the news or anywhere like that because the police and the top people in this town were like so embarrassed that they weren’t able to solve it, that they covered everything all up. But if you come here and ask anyone, they’ll all tell you the same thing that I’m gonna tell you now. This story starts in my school. Maybrook Elementary is kindergarten through fifth grade. So this one Wednesday is like a normal day for the whole school, and they had this teacher who was new. Her name was Justine Gandy, and on this day, she was going to her classroom just like every morning. But today was different. Today, none of her kids were there. Every other class at that school had all their kids. Even the other third grade Mrs. Belt taught was full. But Mrs. Gandy’s room was totally empty. Well.. Not totally. There was one boy there, and his name was Alex Lily, and he was the only kid in the class of eighteen that came to school that day. And do you know why? He was the only one there, because the night before, at 2:17 in the morning, every other kid woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs, open the front door, walked across the front yard and into the dark. And they never. Came. Back.

You're supposed to forget this by the end b/c it makes no sense.

I know but they showed the dad saying he’s not even sure how they’re related to her and doesn’t remember her. She just randomly shows up and you let her stay a month?

She wasn’t their aunt. She had them in some sort of spell.

Hated it. The premise started off really good and strong, but as the movie went along the logic holes and stupidity got worse and worse.

The Aunt Gladys character SUCKED. I don’t know what people are smoking to gaslight themselves into thinking she’s this new horror icon, she’s literally a nothing burger. Just some hag with a bowl cut. No intimidation, nothing cool or scary. Just some hag you’d see shopping at Walmart.

Why does Josh Brolin see a giant gun floating in the sky? Never explained. I guess the director wanted to make a political statement for 30 seconds and forgot about it.

Why do we focus so much time on the cop, the junkie and the dirty needles. Will that come back in play since we stopped all momentum of the movie and took a detour to focus on this out of place slapstick? No, nothing ever comes of it.

Julie Gardner’s character is sleeping with the cop and gets her arse beat by his wife. How does that factor into the story? It doesn’t.

If the kids were in the basement the whole time, wouldn’t the police dogs be able to smell their scent and lead the cops directly to the Aunt? Nope don’t think about that.

If Aunt Gladys could possess anybody, why wouldn’t she possess Julia Gardner after getting strands of her hair, and eliminate her from investigating you further. Nah? I’ll just have this fat Asian guy run around like a retard after her. That should really get the job done.

Zach Cregger ain’t it. Between this and Barbarian he has fooled everyone into thinking he a genius for throwing a bunch of shite at the wall to distract you from his overall weak writing.

That’s what they want but it was probably a spell put on them to think they had an aunt

Damn, those are all good points. I just dropped it another letter grade

After the first 20 minutes, I thought it was going to be a classic. What a bait and switch.

Possibly, but it’s the only thing that makes sense. Neither of them were sure how they knew her, but they were sure that they knew her.

I give a average to below average at best for storyline and directing.
Only saved grace was by actors / actresses.

I liked Gladys, but she’s definitely overrated. Amy Madigan’s getting Oscar buzz, but it’s undeserved.

I didn’t care for how it ended, but as you mentioned the first half, 2/3rds was pretty good.

The movie doesn't make sense

Making sense wasn't on the list of priorities for the director

Didn't love it, didn't hate it either. Based off the praise and hype I was expecting way more from this to be honest though. I found myself kind of bored of it by the end and thought the last 10 minutes was too cartoonish for me. A solid 6/10 movie nobody will remember 10 years from now.

Gladys was able to enter their dreams, so she was also possibly able to implant fake memories.

I thought it was great.

But it was really popular really quickly, so then it became cool to hate it. Not reading through the thread, but the number of hipsters that frequent this board, I imagine there are already a few such posts

It wasn't perfect, but it was a great slow burn supernatural thriller.
