Maybe, but others involved have said that there is definitely some messaging about that. Either way, making a point about that wasn't the issue I had, it was just the way that was done. It just came off more forced than anything and kind of an eye roll moment.
If that point wasn't to make a political commentary about school shootings, thats an odd way to not make that statement as you show a massive glowing AR-15 looking gun in a fever dream
Hell, I think they could have done that entire fever dream and shown like marionette hands or something and that would have made a lot more sense than him seeing a big glowing gun in the sky with the time, and connecting that to the kids have been weaponized.

I saw some people who said it might be ptsd from brolins characters war experience. But it’s probably just up to the viewer.
Very possible. In the first scene he is in, there is a poster on his son's wall with that style rifle in it, so part could be that.
Its not a huge part worth overdwelling on. Just seemed like a scenario where they already had the idea of saying the kids were turned into weapons and needed a way to force that connection. The more organic one would have been him just thinking they were being controlled or possessed.

+1 it was a weird scene. It felt out of place.

There’s nothing definitive about it though and it doesn’t tie into the story if that’s the case. The only guns in this movie were used to fight off people possessed by a witch lol. I’m going with the ptsd thing. It makes more sense.

I think someone mentioned earlier too, there could be a cool prequel in this world. They did a really good job with incorporating some fairly common Witch lore and utilizing them in some new ways. They could easily do a movie in multiple different time periods that would work well, maybe even have a coven or something. 1920's era could be interesting. Obviously something in the Salem time peroid would be fun. Doubt Cregger has any interest in that, but would be a cool spinoff I think. Any weird mass disappearance event, could be a setting for them.

I read in an interview he has ideas for a sequel. It won’t be until after he finishes his Resident Evil reboot next.

Take that for what you will. Sounds like the movie was written more out of the grief of losing Trevor Moore
Release date was the anniversary of Trevor’s death

At that point though, they hadn't been turned into weapons.
So if you have a gun or a knife lying around; they are not weapons until you use them?

That's not the profound reply you think it is.

Saw it last night.
I liked it, but didn’t love it. The theming was a bit of a letdown—I expected something super serious like Prisoners, but the tone kept bouncing back and forth.
The AR symbolism felt very on the nose, though I understand what Creggers was going for. Still, imagine if Brolin had encountered a samurai sword, tank, nuke, etc.—all weapons too. The AR is the poster child for school-shooting gun control advocacy, which made it feel preachy.
I really enjoyed the principal scene and the initial kids-running sequence. I just wish they had explained more about how the 17 kids contributed to the witch’s life force.
Overall, it was a slow burn that rushed its ending—6.5/10.

Snuck off for a little afternoon viewing. I thought it was just ok. I’d probably give it a 6/10 overall, not bad, but not great.
I wish there was more detail into HOW the kids were helping the witch. Was she harvesting their blood for youth, or something like that? I just assumed that’s why she wanted them, but if that’s the case whey did she think the older parents would help in the first place?
Also, the theater I watched it in felt like the sound mix was fricked up. It was too quiet, and also it felt like the sound system wasn’t picking up eerie subtleties in the scoring of scenes. It felt like there should have been some sort of eerie sound/music, but instead there was just a lot of silence at times. I could see this being a not so insignificant factor in my overall takeaway.

Usually how things go with Witches, children are the most potent but sometimes they can use adults to get by. I'm just assuming they went that that general trope. She also probably knew the parents weren't a long term solution, but knew she could use them to eventually get their son to help her to get to the other kids. But I agree, I think seeing a little more into her ritual of how they are used would have been a good addition.

Yeah. Makes sense. Probably just decided to let the audience imagine it, rather than spelling it out, which I can understand.

With the success of this movie, there will be definitely be a Weapons 2. Looking forward to seeing Creggers Resident Evil too.

Honestly where a lot of horror movies go wrong are when they feel the need to over explain things. I’m sure he could’ve put in a scene where she directly explains exactly her background and why she’s doing everything she is, but not sure that makes it a better movie or adds much.
The thing about building a world/story shrouded is mystery/intrigue is usually the more you explain, the less interesting it actually becomes. (Obviously there’s a balance there to find)
