I thought that all happened in one of the season finales. He was fixing the cheat with the fat neighbor but had a heart attack before it could happen, no?

He will die of a heart attack, I believe. The first one was to set up his heart problems. His beer drinking isn't helping, either.

The show has become more and more like a serial soap opera and less cute and funny as it was the first 3 seasons

That would make sense as they have generally portrayed his dad as a good guy overall in this series. He's flirted with Brenda, but that is it.
I could see it being that "old" Sheldon was remembering his dad in the wrong way. They did have that one scene where he had his dad on VHS tape giving a football halftime speech, and Sheldon was really touched by it.

Hmm. Considering his photographic memory, it's going to have to be trauma altering which would fit in with his mom getting caught.
