I think it was about a year or two prior to Burt’s death. Morgan asked him some blunt questions and Burt replied with blunt answers.

He was first choice for the role of Michael Corleone in The Godfather. A formal offer was being drafted and Marlon Brando intervened, saying that he felt so strongly that the casting decision would be a wrong one that he would walk away from the role of Vito if Burt was cast. Asked if Burt held hard feelings, Burt said no because Brando was right. He would have loved to have done the role but Pacino was perfect as Michael.

Later, Brando in a way made amends by turning down the role of Louis in Deliverance, feeling that he was not the right one for the role. Brando recommended Burt, and Burt got the job.

Burt said Deliverance was the best thing he ever did as an actor. He thinks it’s just about perfect and is very proud of his work in it.

He was offered and turned down the role of Han Solo in Star Wars. Asked if he regretted doing so, Burt said no, that he wasn’t a fan of Star Wars then and never has been.

He was offered and turned down the role that went to Richard Gere in Pretty Woman. He said that is his biggest regret as an actor. He would have loved doing that movie and felt it would have extended his leading man roles. He said he completely misjudged the script, thinking not much of it, and totally misjudged Julia Roberts, thinking her not to be talented or serious as an actress.

When asked who he felt was the best actor in his lifetime, Burt said Jack Nicholson.

He lost his virginity at age 15 to a 45 year old woman. He was diving and swimming off a pier in Florida one day and an attractive, and what he considered at that time to be old, woman was watching him. She asked him if he wanted to come to her place for dinner. He said sure, he loved to eat. Asked jokingly by Morgan how was dinner, Burt replied “fast.”

Sally Field was and will always be the love of his life. He said the chemistry and connection they had was irreplaceable. He never got over her. He said that he messed it up and that it is his greatest regret in life because he will always believe that they would have had a wonderful life together.

No one has passed up as many great parts as Burt.

ETA he can act like missing out on those iconic roles/paydays don’t bother him but he retired from acting after picking a league of extraordinary gentleman over LOTR, so it clearly does

Burt was too charismatic for this role. Gere played it subdued and perfectly.

Reynolds had an off-screen persona that almost exceeded his onscreen charisma. Sit him on a talk show couch and he’d have the host and audience eating out of his hand.

That's an interesting comment because most of his later appearances that I saw were uncomfortable to the point of cringe.

They’re no Burt Reynolds. Nor are they Sean Connery.

While Sally has said she deeply loved Burt... she's a bit less optimistic about that idea of them living happily ever after.

The thing is... I don't think Burt could have changed. He was who he was. Some of the things that made him a great actor kind of made him a fairly unpleasant person.

I am not knocking Burt Reynolds here. He had a great career and he was a better actor than people give him credit for. He was also never going to be a Tom Hanks or Kurt Russell type of guy that settles into a comfortable married life and is happy.

A lot of old time actors turned down lots and lots of roles that would have made their career huge. I don't know if it was laziness oflr they just had a different mindset, but how does and actor like Reynolds accept Cop and a Half, yet then turn down Pretty Woman.

My guess is, that these guys never read the script and their agents/handlers were the ones that told them to turn the movie down. When you get so famous and entrenched in Hollywood, you probably lose your judgment skills a little bit.

Lots of older actors also always turned down Sci fi stuff. Reynolds in 1977 wouldn't have worked as Han Solo.

I'm definitely no expert in the movie biz, but aren't the deals with the studios sometimes like "okay you can have this role, but this is a two picture deal and we'll make the call on movie number 2"?
