Was the Starbucks cup actually a product placement?

I think it was. It's sitting right in front of her. There's no way they all said "roll em" with that obvious thing hanging out there.

The show has limited revenue streams. HBO gets more subscriptions, but that's nothing compared to movie ticket revenues or network TV ad revenues.

Producers have come up with some interesting ways to weave products into period pieces, something known to be extremely difficult. The ending of the movie State and Main makes fun of this fact. Episode 4 has had people talking about Starbucks for days, and I guess the presumption is that they love Starbucks so much that they forgot it was in the shot. Or whatever. Anyway, I think it was an intentional product placement.

Also, are the Targaryens just a ripoff of the Taarakians from Heavy Metal? Two groups of attractive, silver-haired people with similar sounding names. The Taarakians have way better tits, but still.

I mean, this is what GRRM looked like back then (is that an astro-sign medallion?). Just sayin'.

Apparently wasn’t even a Starbucks cup. Some other coffee.

No. It wasn't a Starbucks cup. But everyone thought it was and apparently Starbucks did benefit from the publicity.

Then they should have raised enough money for Jon to pat Ghost on the head after he tossed him aside

It was some local Irish coffee joint.

Starbucks Supposedly got like $200 mil in free advertising from it. I have no idea how that is figured, but that’s what I heard on the radio.

How would it be? Product placement is in your face. That was very very very subtle.

Could've been. I think they call that guerrilla advertising.

All I'm saying.

And again, if it's not a product placement, something like that could be in the future. Clearly, it should have been here.

You're literally out of your mind. The Earth is drowning in licensed GoT products.

It's embarrassing, but it happens. Even in big budget productions.

Why would they have removed it then?

Starbucks released a new Dragon drink for the summer a week before the episode aired. I googled starbucks that Monday morning after the episode aired and later in the day got a spotify ad for it.

The fact that they could remove it digitally proves to me that it was intentional. Are we really supposed to believe that it went totally unnoticed until the viewing audience immediately saw it, and then they were like “wow, we should fix that!”

You can see a power cord/box under Stannis Baratheon’s leg when he’s laying next to a tree after he lost the battle against the Bolton’s in Winterfell. At various times it’s been obvious they use rubber prop swords.

Yes. shite happens. The primary and secondary focus of that scene is to the left and upper portions of the screen and an actor’s head obstructs the cup at the beginning of the shot. I’m not sure why having the ability to digitally edit it out would mean it’s on purpose. They can edit out or add anything they want in post.
