children of men is the most recent great “war” movie. It depicts what “war” looks like in the micro sense all over the world, every single day. To the people trapped in those situations, that movie (and the siege of bexhill in particular), is a way of life.

the vast majority of modern conflict is door to door, behind the scenes

Take away the intro and Fury was better.

We Were Soldiers and Black Hawk Down are great "war" movies.

I'm not sure if the OP is crapping on these movies or he just never watched.

I liked BHD better than SPR but both were great movies. Hurt locker was the most inaccurate piece of shite movie I've ever seen. I did probably 50-75 missions with EOD not to mention countless route recon missions and the movie is just wrong and stupid.

Children of Men: That epic tracking shot from interior to exterior. And yes, it was like urban warfare must be.

SPR took the time to develop characters in addition to Spielberg level action shots.

Mostly unrelated, but Von Ryan's Express (1965) is on TCM right now!

ETA:
The Germans put them on the train, and Trevor Howard just said, "You'll get your Iron Cross now, "Von" Ryan!"

Anybody seen Kajaki (or Kilo Two Bravo)? Pretty great recent one to check out if you haven’t. Man...it wore me out.

I liked Hacksaw Ridge and Fury and 1917. Midway was okay but I liked the original better.

I would put Hurt Locker in the pantheon of the last few decades.

American Sniper was also damned solid.

The one thing we don’t have a storage of is good war movies.

We get one Oscar nominated like every year.

1917 was a much better film all around. The set of it was incredible. And while not a nonfiction film, I thought it did an great job of showing the trenches, no man’s land, and the burnt out towns. The film set was amazing. And the acting/script was really well done. I wish it’d have been longer. Could’ve done with an extra 20 or so minutes.

there was barely any "War" in 1917. you get a dog fight, and one volly of troops at the end. I thought 1917 set up the area great but didnt deliver on the product.

In what way was The Hurt Locker accurate?
I have no opinion on whether it was accurate, in the documentary sense.

As cinema, it was outstanding.

We Were Soldiers came after, so no.
God, I thought it was pre-Ryan. Definitely one of the best.

If you have not read the book ... do.
