Was Saving Private Ryan the last truly great war movie?

I watched Midway and 1917 last night. I thought Midway was an atrocious CGI fluff film more akin to a Marvel movie than a movie about the most important day in US Naval history. It was historically accurate but it absolutely was a Hollywood fluff film. Hated the script, hated the acting, hated the comically atrocious CGI bullshite.
1917 was a much better film all around. The set of it was incredible. And while not a nonfiction film, I thought it did an great job of showing the trenches, no man’s land, and the burnt out towns. The film set was amazing. And the acting/script was really well done. I wish it’d have been longer. Could’ve done with an extra 20 or so minutes.
With that being said, any way you want to spin it, Saving Private Ryan (and BoB if we can lump that in there for another Spielberg/Hanks tag team) is better than both. It’s really not close at all.
Why does it seem so difficult for there to be a really great, iconic war movie nowadays? I’m sure I’m not thinking of another well made war movie since SPR, but I’m drawing a blank.

And what do those two movies have in common? Tom Sizemore played significant roles.

It really hasn’t been that long and thankfully there haven’t been a lot of wars

The Hurt Locker. Best film on the ME conflicts by far.

Hurt Loxker was very solid.
While not really a “war movie, I’d say Zero Dark Thirty was a good one for military action
And planning

I know I’ve seen the movie, but I can’t think of a single scene that really stands out to me.
I thought American Sniper was pretty good as well as Lone Survivor. And better ME movies even though Hurt Locker won Best Picture.

A lot of movies are well that have been mentioned are well made.
SPR story plus its varied action and non action scenes were just pretty much perfect is why its iconic.
1917 just was different..more focused on drama and less on action.

I haven’t seen saving private Ryan in a while but I just finished 1917 and god damn that movie was great. One of the most beautifully shot films I can remember. I put it up there with saving private Ryan

It was a great movie but the ending damn near ruined it.
Ryan didn't have to "earn" a goddamn thing and Captain Miller should've never put that voodoo on him. The ending was horribly ill conceived and should've never been written that way.
It forced Ryan to needlessly and pointlessly carry a lifelong burden of guilt for surviving and made Captain Miller look like a petty, resentful bitch for having to carry out his orders.
Ryan was a good soldier, who no more wanted to be "saved" than Miller wanted to be the savior.
Now don't get me wrong. I get the "earn this" message. It was just out of place in all this and probably not something a competent and even gifted officer like Miller would've said.
"Earn this" really diminished the Miller character and reduced this excellent officer to something bitter. Especially when you consider Miller and his men accomplished great things in their journey to save Ryan.
"Earn this" was a horribly contrived and not well thought out way to end this movie.

Was SPR a great "war" movie? Or was it a well-made film around a weak premise made with some great actors and a kick arse beach assault opening scene?
I mean, it's difficult to compare a 200 minute film to one of the best mini-series of all time (at 3x the length) in BoB, even if made by a lot of the same core group of folks, but BoB is the last great WWII film project of which I am aware.
When Trumpets Fade is excellent, although it almost imparts a Vietnam vibe on World War II.
Blackhawk Down is a better "war" movie than SPR, overall, again, IMHO.

No. There have been several but now they have to make them all big productions so there aren't as many.
