Was it known that anakyi would be darth Vader?

Was Anakin Skywalker becoming Darth Vader part of the Star Wars lore before it happened in Revenge of the Sith? Did hardcore fans know this would happen because it was in books or something? Or was it created just for the movies?

The whole purpose of the prequels was Anakin being seduced by the dark side/a failed messiah archetype.

I’m gonna be super honest, 10 year old me was absolutely floored when it was “revealed” that Palpatine was actually a Sith Lord.

It did sort of come out of nowhere. Then you looked back at a few clues and it all made sense, like:
He gets called that name in the original trilogy.
He tells Luke he's Luke's father.
The prequels were 100% built around the storyline of Anakin turning into Vader.
Then, it all makes sense and you feel foolish for missing it, like:
