that's understandable from a 10 year old's perspective when the prequels came out.

I think, however, he was referred to as "emperor palpatine" in the OT

Are there people who really only saw the prequels to be asking questions like this?

I mean people didn't think it might be important to go back and watch the biggest cinematic phenomen of all-time?

The original trilogy was too long ago?

I don’t think Palpatine is ever mentioned. Just called emperor in Empire and Jedi.

Not that that has any relevance to the op. Anakin was mentioned quite a few times.

Even in the absence of an overt direct statement that Palpatine and the Sith Lord emperor were one and the same, there were so very many visual and behavioral context clues and hints, unless you were 10, it would have been very hard to be surprised.

Extra points to you jlovel7, for humility and honesty.

I believe in ESB the Emperor refers to Luke as the son of Skywalker.

Was Anakin Skywalker becoming Darth Vader part of the Star Wars lore before it happened in Revenge of the Sith?

No one knew Natalie Portman would fall in love with a 9 year old though

No. But it’s the behaviors of individual major characters and an ability to read human nature (even in movies) that can offer clues. Didn’t you notice how ingratiating Palpatine was toward young Anakin? His increasing use of flattery? Motive? His furtive, sometimes shifty eye movements? His exaggerated golden honey tones when speaking to the princess or the Jedi characters? Raised red flags right away for me as somebody who could be treacherous... just a few dots to connect to him secretly being the pre-emergent emperor/Sith. Plus - he already held no small amount of power in the Senate, and a physical resemblance, plus what other character would be the likely emperor?

Palpatine was used in the EU novels long before the prequels. If you were a big fan, you knew who the emperor was immediately. It wasn't a surprise at all, well kids and casuals might have been caught off guard.

His first name is Sheev.

Maybe I'm a simpleton, but this was pretty much it for me. You had to think the Emperor was in the prequels and there was only one guy who looked like the Emperor and he REALLY looked like the Emperor.
