Holy frick what an uncomfortable watch, much like Enemy.
Went into it because Imogen Poots (smoke) and Eisenberg has good chemistry in The Art of Self Defense.
But damn... what a creepy film. Can’t really make up my mind on it.

I watched this Saturday without watching the previews and holy shite creepy and unsettling is right. It’s such a weird vibe, especially with the setting. And then that scene near the end when she goes on the attack...eerie. The child screaming was so nerve wracking. It’s definitely worth a watch but that’ll be the first and last time I watch that.

Watched it very interesting and creepy. But why I really didn't "understand" was
Spoilers
Why he was digging in the same location and who ever was there before him.

Yeah I didn’t understand that piece either. Wish we could’ve seen the thing that it was reporting to. When the kid does the imitation was creepy as hell.

I thought this thread was something to do with this

I got the impression that it was planned for him to do it that way. Similar to a computer program. Same thing with why Gemma couldn’t let the “kid” die.
Edit
I enjoyed the movie, I just wish there was a little more information on certain things:
Why did they die so quickly?
Was Martins only goal to get people to into Yonder?
As someone stated who they reported to everyday?
Were the aliens trying to take over earth or just using humans to raise the Martins?

Were they raising them just to become real estate agents? That’s a pretty shitty end goal. As soon as one gets out, the previous one dies? Just seemed like a meaningless exercise.

I agree, I wish there was more information in the movie but oh well.

I thought it had a good start but just kinda fell flat. Movie had a lot of potential.

Seriously?
The start sucked, then it got good

Just noticed this while browsing Prime and hit play based on the trailer. Had no idea what to expect, but that was nice and creepy.
Wish we found out more. I’m leaning more towards something extra dimensional or demonic, rather than aliens, after she fell through and saw the others. And I thought Jesse found himself at the bottom of the pit.

It was a cool watch. Lot of unexplained meanings to me which is probably why it didnt get better reviews. There also is a lot of symbolism with the birds at the beginning.
Also, frick that screaming kid.

The momma bird lays her egg in another birds nest. they hatch and push all the other babies out and the new parents raise the baby as their own. but they are much bigger and need more food so these new birds have to forage all day everyday to feed the screaming baby bird to the point of death and the baby is then grown enough to fend for its self.
So the creatures do something similar by hijacking these parents and forcing them to take care of their baby to the point of their death.

NOTE: This is a bump of a six year old thread.
So I watched Vivarium last night after seeing it in a Backrooms thread last month.
Firstly, that movie was weird as frick (which I liked). But outside of that, it just wasn't very good. I don't need everything explained to me, but I do like at least SOME sort of exposition or explanation of WTF is going on...even if just a shred.
I echo some of the comments and questions in this thread.
I go back and forth on if I think the bodies Tom dug up in the yard were his/Gemma's, or if they were the previous residents. The main reason I think it is he and Gemma is because why would someone dig THAT deep in the first place? Tom basically did it because it was his field of expertise, so to me that means it was likely that he found their own bodies and the whole thing is sort of a time loop kind of thing.
But the flip side of that is that their "kid" ends up leaving and replacing Martin in the outside world. So maybe it wasn't Tom and Gemma's bodies in the hole. I don't know, it's a bit confusing to me I think.
I do like Ramrod's explanation above with the baby birds, and I do think that's the obvious foreshadowing, along with other dialogue very early in the film.
I think the idea behind the movie is solid and interesting, but the execution falls flat. It reminds me of how I felt after watching Upstream Color...I get what they were going for, but it was just executed pretty poorly. I did like this movie better than UC though...that movie sucked despite me wanting it to be awesome.
Anyway, I guess I'd recommend Vivarium if the liminal space stuff interests you. Just go in with a low bar.

What I didn't understand is why didn't "they" just fill in the hole when he wasn't digging.

Not sure. I guess maybe because they didn't really care what he was doing anyway? Who knows. As soon as they both died though, the grown boy filled up the hole and peaced out to take Martin's place at the store though.
Just a weird as frick movie with no real point to it really. But I didn't hate it.
