The rest of the article is actually pretty good. She still tries to defend the movie, but it outlines the more glaring reasons why the movie failed: the campy humor, the destruction of Luke's character, and the lack of resolution from central plot points in TFA.

I don't think he was trolling the audience. I think he recognized that the Snoke/Ren scenes were extremely dark. That lots of rebellion was going to die and fail. That we were going to lose Luke very shortly (timeline wise) after losing Han. That Hux - as campy as he was - was a vile human being.

Vader at least was a father. A bad one. But in the end, we know him as the villain that killed Sidious and saved Luke.

Kylo Ren killed his own father and nearly pulled the trigger on his mother.

Rian messed up by trying to lighten the mood with that kind of silly humor throughout the film. The 2nd film in a trilogy should always be dark, defeating, and difficult to bear. Think about LOTR 2 or The Matrix Reloaded or Empire. At the end of those films, you're worried about the characters. The director shouldn't add humor to detract from that.

The SJW shtt isn't terrible in the film IMO.
