They should have provided a list of the other films up for the award that year.

Most of that List is correct.
Except for Shakespeare in Love. Not at all a bad movie. It's quite clever, has a great script, all around great performances. It's one of the better ensemble pieces out there. It's unique.

Slumdog Millionaire was pretty good IMO.

The only one of those I've seen is Crash. I watched it because I was curious about it and in my head I thought "It won Best Picture, so it can't be that bad..." And it was fricking terrible.
And it sort of got me on the line of not watching BP Oscar winners if I wasn't sure if I'd like it or not.

Shakespeare in Love does indeed get a bad reputation and many of its detractors have likely never even seen the movie. I was surprised how much I liked it when I finally saw it. However, it still shouldn't have beaten Saving Private Ryan. Though I do agree that it shouldn't be ranked among the "worst" films to win Best Picture. In any other year it would have been a worthy contender. You can't say the same thing about a film like Crash.

Seconded.
Shakespeare wasn’t necessarily the worst but it being out Saving Private Ryan is problematic compared to, say, Out Of Africa.
Out of Africa faced a variety of meh for the most part in comparison.

That's not what I'm doing. I'm simply saying that between the two, I would have voted for Saving Private Ryan over Shakespeare in Love. However, I'm not upset that Shakespeare won it considering it is a thoroughly entertaining film.

I watched it for a class back in college and got into an argument over it so my recollection may be colored by that particular experience, but I thought it was booty.

Another version of this list is which movie won over a movie that is now seen as an all-time classic. The canonical example is How Green Was My Valley winning over Citizen Kane.
