Here is the puzzler - however, I analyze it thusly - he has a taste for both cocaine and alcohol. Even if he never developed a heroin problem, I would wager he's at least experimented on binge - and, if nothing else speedballing with cocaine. In addition, when meth really took off - I'm certain he at least tried that - probably smoked it, but some meth heads inject as well.
And it doesn't take a lot to get it. Obviously, the worse of an injectable drug problem you have, the greater your exposure to AIDS via that vector.
ETA: At the end of the day, the problem with it being Charlie Sheen is that it's TOO obvious.

This is the strongest #2 behind Sheen for me at this point. Also a pretty hard partier - a lot of cats mentioned here either don't have that reputation, or it is contained to Hollywood.
There have been HIV rumors about him for years, as well. He's got the history of drug abuse, sex tapes, etc. So, could be.

ETA: Leto recently won an Oscar for playing an AIDS victim. Maybe the part was personal for him, and maybe Hollywood gave him the Oscar because behind the scenes, a lot of them know about his HIV.

Farrell has won a bunch of Irish acting awards - no Oscars, but he also has wins from Boston, Shanghai, London, Golden Globes, and San Diego - in looking it up just now, I'm surprised how many mid-tier awards he's actually won - now the Golden Globe was for In Bruges, but I remember him back in Tigerland and he was great in that before I even know who he was.
So - it isn't as much of a stretch for him than some others on this list.
