Wasn't he from California? Democrat. And that's ok. It's a movie.

I must have missed the part where it's stated he's from California.

I've always taken him to be a New York, Rockefeller Republican.

I thought his wife was doing an event in their home state when the invasion hit. I may have been incorrect though.

If anything, if he's having trouble with the polls in California, that lends more credence to him being a Republican.

Reagan and Nixon were from California.

I would lean Republican (moderate) based on the fact that Judd Hirsh (the stereotypical whiny Jewish liberal) seems to hate him. I think Goldblum is also presented as an oil/water relationship with his ex.

I want to believe he was an Independent. Heroes like Whitmore shouldn't be saddled to the establishment.

also the Foxy black stripper "voted for the other guy", so i'd say he's likely a republican.

The stereotypical, armed Jewish liberal, prepared to kill looters and rioters?

He was definitely a Republican given a few context clues:

1. War hero.
2. His SECDEF is clearly an establishment neo-con.
3. His closest friend/advisor is part of the military establishment.
4. The black stripper from California "voted for the other guy."
5. He was disliked by the establishment media.

Independence Day didn't come out in the last 4 years. This is not a good indicator...

What are you saying? That strippers can’t be Republicans?

As we learned in the sequel, she went to medical school and became a doctor. Maybe she doesn’t want that tax and spend liberal Whitmore to take 40 percent of her check?

Jews and blacks aren’t exactly reliable republican voters.

It seemed to me that Whitmore was meant to be a young and charismatic version of George H.W. Bush.

I figured Republican, just because how Goldberg and his dad talked when mentioning him.
Though hard to tell. His cabinet seemed hawkish too.
