Gonna give it a shot. Any good?

Most certainly man. Has a great storyline although I'm a bit unsure about the main character (Barry) who really appears to be a bottom tier actor....at least on this show anyway.

I'll tune in again next Tuesday and glad to see the bulk of you enjoyed it as well.

So it's basically a sexed up version of Syrian history since 2000?

- Dictator father dies ( like Hafez al-Assad)
- Brother/heir to the throne taken out in a car accident (like Bassel Al Assad)
- Mild-mannered doctor son living abroad who wasn't supposed to rule suddenly thrust into the spot (like Bashar al-Assad)

Yep, I had the same thoughts. Jamal also shares many of the same characteristics as Saddam's son Uday. Very, very interesting show. I will definitely follow this season.

I've got it recorded. When the trailers first started I thought it was about the Mexican cartel

I was very pleasantly surprised. The critics have been ripping this show to shreds. Not quite sure why but I'd guess it's politically motivated somehow. Overall I thought it was pretty damn good, and I'm quite interested.

However, there are some weaknesses that I see potentially causing major issues in the future. I liked his wife up until the last 15 minutes when she turned into the stereotypical annoying and nagging female lead that every single show absolutely has to have. Even the great ones. We didn't see much with the daughter, but the son already sucks and his gay storyline is most likely going to be a disaster. Why do these shows continually have such a problem with the protagonist's family?

Lastly, I'm not much of a fan of the lead actor yet. I understand his character is passive right now, but the actor's face seemed to be stuck with the same exact look of concern on it the entire episode. Maybe he made this choice to contrast how much he will change in the future.

I will definitely continue watching though.

Just now watched this and I really enjoyed it. Tremendous potential but I cringe a little at where the gay son storyline might go. Regardless of the harsh anti-gay laws, I don't think homosexuality is all that shocking or uncommon in the Islamic world. Those laws seem more aimed at keeping gays quietly in the closet than at some naive notion that they can actually stamp out gayness in the population.

All in all, a first rate premiere.

Yes, annoying wife for sure especially when her husband who knows the country better says "let's go".

By the same token, if the guy says "we could be in danger...do what I ask and I'll explain later"...

It was entertaining and ill tune in next week.

Why is this show getting shite from critics? Have they seen more episodes or something? While it's not top tier, it still seems like a very entertaining show.

I guess maybe critics think it's too stereotypical and predictable?

Main complaint I have if the wife being so ignorant about her husband's childhood and home country. It isn't 1950. We have google and 24/7 media coverage.

The gay son thing just seems dumb and typical. Seems like a cheap, unnecessary story line.

That being said....still has my interest.

Just finished it. Solid pilot. Intriguing premise.

I'd like to hear some thoughts on the Barry's motivation for the execution reveal at the end. I think it was to get his Father's approval seeing as his Father favors the oldest (the heir of course) as we saw at the beginning when he saved Jamal and not both of them. My brother thinks it was Barry trying to "save" Jamal from having to do something he didn't want to do. Thoughts?

I agree with your brother, but I also think he was stepping up to show his dad that although he was the second son, he was stronger.

Decent pilot. I willl DVR and watch it for awhile.

I'm actually kinda struggling with House of Cards. It was an incredible show, but I'm not used to hating characters on tv shows, and I hate Frank Underwood.

I mean, even Joffrey, one of the most despicable characters HBO has ever created, I laughed at his antics more than anything else. It's like watching a kid play GTA and just torturing all the NPC's in sight.

Maybe I hated House of Cards because it's scary that it's a realistic story.

ETA: Back to Tyrant though, I think it's a little premature to start judging character and storyline development after a pilot. This is a concept for a show I've personally never seen anything like before, so I'll hang out and enjoy it until the characters become so boring it's not worth watching.
