Me too. Well suprised not bummed.
I need to learn not to expect certain things when going into a Coen Bros film. They never fail to suprise me with the unconventional way they do things.
It seems the main complaint is this movie wast "gritty" enough. And obviously thats how it came off in the previews as well as the title leading yo to believe that too. But the title was a about two people's character, not the style of western we were watching. I liked being able to have a dramatic western AND laugh. You dont see that anymore. I was glad the Coen's decided to go that route. Cheers to them.

My only complaint was that it ended too soon.

I thought the exact opposite. It should have ended sooner or had a better ending. It probably should have ended right when bridges fires his gun after getting to the cabin. I just thought that everything after that was a let down and was unsatisfying.

The ending of the movie meticulously follows the ending of the book.

Isn't this the same thing everyone said about No Country for Old Men? I like their nontraditional endings that are faithful adaptations of the source material.

The guy with the bear head was the equivalent of Sam Elliot's character in The Big Lebowski - just a random and obscure appearance that makes no sense other than to leave the viewer scratching his head.

The Coen brothers love to add those to their movies.

Bridges went from old stoner in California (Lebowski) to a drunk cowboy (True Grit), and nailed it once again!

Saw this over the weekend and overly enjoyed it. Don't think I've ever laughed that much in a western

Probably the funniest part of the show IMO.

Finally saw it. Really liked it and thought the movie was great, but not the Coens' best work, which is truly exhalted company at this point. The relationships really developed beautfully and it was such a finely crafted film. Terrific job with story and mood.

But it fell just short of their highest standards.

Just got back and thought it was Ok to Good, but certainly not great and not anything I will rush to see again if ever.

Didn't like the cheesy CG snow all the time. It looked really fake and wasn't done well at all. Same goes for the forest they rode through on the way back.

saw it last night and after reading the thread im glad I read the book before seeing the movie. I knew what to expect and was really impressed with TCB interpretation of the book. From the time she went to get water from the creek to the end of the movie was almost scene for scene and line for line straight from the pages of Portis' novel (except the novel had her being forced to forge the signature on some bank notes for Ned Pepper)

TCB were able to add to Portis' dialogue seamlessly and hilariously.

I can see how if you were expecting NCFOM you would be disappointed.

Loved the movie and can't wait to watch again.

I went to Redbox at two in the morning to pick up a copy, watched it, and dug up this thread.
I loved it. I'm watching it again as I write.

The DVD was released today and I expect many people will be seeing the movie for the first time. Would it have been better for me to start a new thread?

Nah, I think this one will do. I'm probably going to go buy it on my lunch break. I loved the movie.

********SPOILERS*******

I thought this movie was wonderful. A couple of thoughts:

1. The bear skinned medicine man reminded me of a character from a video game. In fact, this movie reminded me of Red Dead Redemption just in the sense that they felt the same.

2. I didn't like a few parts of the ending. I especially didn't like how the story suddenly shifted into "Ok, we're going to hit you with a bunch of intense emotions starting now - she falls into a snake pit for suspense; she's going to die from the venom for more suspense; let's kill the horse for sadness; let's chop off her arm for sympathy...."

3. I hated how Brolin just so happened to be at the river the same time the girl was going to fetch some water. The movie spent the majority of its time chasing this guy down and instead of actually finding him, the writer said, "Ok, let's make this an 'oops' moment and end the movie."
