I thought this movie was wonderful. A couple of thoughts:

1. The bear skinned medicine man reminded me of a character from a video game. In fact, this movie reminded me of Red Dead Redemption just in the sense that they felt the same.

2. I didn't like a few parts of the ending. I especially didn't like how the story suddenly shifted into "Ok, we're going to hit you with a bunch of intense emotions starting now - she falls into a snake pit for suspense; she's going to die from the venom for more suspense; let's kill the horse for sadness; let's chop off her arm for sympathy...."

3. I hated how Brolin just so happened to be at the river the same time the girl was going to fetch some water. The movie spent the majority of its time chasing this guy down and instead of actually finding him, the writer said, "Ok, let's make this an 'oops' moment and end the movie."

I can do nothing for you, son.

Remake =/= Original. Remake stays true to the book.

Saw the remake about a week ago. Maybe it's cause it's been awhile seen I seen the Wayne version but I didn't find the remake to be much different story wise other than the ending.

Not necessarily. They did their interpretation of the book not the movie.

The original True Grit movie is one of the most overrated movies of all time so I was glad the Coens did one.

I've really have only heard praise from it around here. Occasionally people agree that's it's overrated but the Wayne lovers came out the woodworks when the new version came out.

The old Mattie was just terrible. Very annoying. And the dukes performance was just standard duke, except he had an eyepatch. He got a courtesy Oscar.

she was annoying but not terrible imho.

it's a shame he got a courtesy Oscar because he should have gotten one a long time before that.

My grandfather, who is a DIEHARD John Wayne fan, refused to go see the new True Grit because he hated the original so much. I've seen the original, it's awful, imo. I know people (who probably will never see the new version) that argue the Duke's version is vastly superior. That makes me want to hit kittens in the head with a shovel.

Yeah I don't mind the courtesy Oscar because he probably should have already had one.

The new vs the old reminds me of the Jack Nicholson Joker vs Heath's Joker debates.

Pretty good comparison.

I prefer classic movies over new releases. But give me the Coens and Ledgers version by a mile in those debates.

I'm not sure there is an accurate way to compare the two. They were (almost) different characters with the same name.
