Really, it can be explained quite simply. He is a person that has obviously studied religion & such, and has also reflected deeply within his own self. So he could just be reciting beliefs & theories that are already in his head from the past. He's speaking in the moment, but his ideas are way past the developmental stage.
Yeah, he lost his daughter and marriage, killed a guy who shot up a baby with meth, spent some time in a psych ward, doesn't sleep and is on quaaludes. He obviously spent a lot of time developing his ideas and beliefs on humanity, etc...
My guess over the next couple of episodes is Rust does some undercover work to get inside the Reggie dude's meth business that ends with a shootout where Reggie gets picked up for the murder. Rust doesn't believe he's the guy and makes a stink about it but they close the case. I don't think the 2 new detectives think Rust is the killer, but they want to know what led him to thinking it was someone that was still out there.

You're assuming thats actually him? The way this show is twisting and turning, I'm not so sure.

This show is ridiculously awesome.

Also, what do you think Maggie called Rust about?
Posted on 1/27/14 at 8:56 am to JBeam
She wanted to know if Marty was really working. Basically Russ ain't no snitch.

She's pretty sure Marty is cheating on her. Why else would he leave home after a date night w his wife? She called Rust to try to get the scoop. Rust wouldn't bite.
But they also seem to be setting up the possiblity of Rust and Maggie hooking up, though I don't think it happens.

Yeah, It looks like they will have more of a philosophical connection that Marty will take the wrong one. He does have some jealousy issues.

I don't see it happening either. We also haven't gotten to Laurie yet.
The flashbacks in this show are awesome and the detail well done [Ex. Marty's flashback w/ Maggie]

was last night the first real indication that Marty and his wife are now divorced? after the sex scene, it cuts back to present day and he is rubbing his ring finger with no ring
or did I just miss the signs earlier?

someone mentioned it on here after Ep 1 that he didn't have a ring on in "current time" scenes.

They showed his ringless finger a few times. But last night was the first time they showed him reflecting on it.

His language about "the job" always had me wondering if he was still married. But, I also noticed him pause and look at his ringless finger.

Anyone else see a "Devil Catcher" in the foreground?

Great thread and episode. when it showed marty's slam piece at the bar I said "dem titties" out loud to myself
She has to stay in the show somehow. I guess she will be knocked up at some point.
If Rust were a suspect, why would they let him have that knife during the questioning? I don't think they suspect him at all. There has got to be another layer internally we haven't seen yet. I think the knife this week speaks volumes. Letting him smoke/drink is one thing but keeping a 4 inch blade is completely different.
Marty will think Rust is banging his wife, when he's really banging wifes friend. Marty will flip out and the wife will of course side with Rust.

Hanging out in the yard in your underwear with a gas mask and machete.

Someone on imdb's forum made a good point. At this point, Marty is a pathological liar & Rust is suffering from insomnia. The flashbacks could start getting distorted.

Just finished last night's episode. Holy hell this show is amazing. I don't see how either of the detectives will be the killer. That just seems like an incredibly lazy way out compared to the level of writing we've seen so far. MM is gonna win some awards for this one.

I thought Rust lived in an apartment? Why would he need to borrow Marty's lawnmower?
Yeah. That was weird and didn't really fit. Unless he was intentionally fricking with Marty, which I don't think would be the case. Seemed like just a contrived excuse for the writers to get him to Marty's house innocently to set up Marty's paranoid outburst.
Other things which may have been discussed:
1. The underage whore has the same bracelets on as the Dorie Lang's fried with the star tats. Also, star tat girl also had yellow stars on the shoulders of her sweater.
2. The star theme is apparent, I think that's the main reason behind the choice of lone star beer, which has been hotly debated. Several scenes have had the American Flag (stars and stripes) in the background, and the stripper in the intro and apparently in the next episode is wearing an American Flag bathing suit. The mural at the church (the one painted by the kids) had stars painted in the sky. Note also that when Rust makes the tin man from the beer can, Lone Star is written across his chest. Don't think the stars (other than the black stars of Carcosa obviously) really mean anything in terms of whodunnit. Just a recurring symbolism in the story itself.
3. Marty's father in law holds his beer like a fig.
4. Another poster pointed out that I was wrong that the interviews of Rust and Marty were in different rooms. They are in fact in the same room, however from different angles. Also, during Rust's interviews, the blinds are closed but during Marty's interviews they're open and ha has his back to them.
5. What is the tattoo on Rust's arm? That's a new addition since 1995, right?
6. Was Marty running over the girl's bike at Tits McGee's apartment foreshadowing as to what we'll learn about Rust's daughter. Some, myself included, think that Rust may have been behind the wheel.
