Forbes writer went “Sherman through Atlanta” scorched earth
Good lord.
Good lord.

I had high hopes for this. Hell, I've defended it every week. But that was absolute garbage. Who is this Otis guy? Why the focus on him early- what did I miss? And his few lines at the end were something out of a Goosebumps episode.
im with you. each successive episode has gotten worse. the last two have been 50 minutes of boring slog with a few final minutes of "ooohhhh spooky isnt it?" type TV.
im going finish it out only because its short. if this had another 6 episodes to go id be out.

I don't think Season 1 falls under the description I just mentioned about the problem with mysteries fwiw.

I had court out of town this morning and I listened to the Watch for episode 3. They weren't the happiest but and had some criticisms I hadn't thought of (like relying on past relationships, which Greenwald explained the issues well), but they kind of let it be a one-off.
I'm REALLY curious what they say about episode 4, because it...did not improve things

Is it common for a critic to get to watch all the episodes in a season ahead of time? And then write about it before they have all aired? Seems like a dick move to me.

Nothing, individually. Your comments and the issues you found seem like they're progeny of the bullshite from season 1.

It seems to have started the revolution

I gave up after episode 3 of Night Country and watched the next three episodes for for one simple reason: I wasn’t enjoying the show enough to care about what happened that much, and I wanted to know if it got better. Was there a satisfying payoff at the end that made the slog I’d endured so far worthwhile? Would the various mysterious clues and character threads come together in the end for a satisfying conclusion?
Unfortunately, I can safely answer these questions with a resounding “No.” If anything, Night Country gets worse in its second half.
welp

Article in Forbes on this. If any of you question if it's worth finishing, take a look at this. Ouch.
Just read it. Yikes.

None of the characters are particularly likable. That’s a big problem, though it could have been a tolerable one if the story they inhabited was compelling enough to make such miserable people watchable. Shows like White Lotus manage this delicate balancing act with style. Not so in Night Country. Jodie Foster’s Liz Danvers has barely a single redeeming quality and her partner, Detective Navarro (Kali Reis) is just as hard to stomach. You can get away with having a detective be this awful of a human being only if they make up for it with a Hercule Poirot-like intellect. Neither Danvers or Navarro possess much in the way of little grey cells, however. In the end, I felt nothing but disdain and disgust for both characters, whose actions in the season finale are beyond the pale.
The creators of the show don’t seem to think so. They want us to connect with these detectives and the choices they make. Unfortunately, it’s never earned. Neither is the show’s utterly predictable, wholly unsatisfying ending or laundry list of cliches—though if you like a good dose of cloying preachiness this might be just the show for you.
What is his screen name? He sounds just like us.

Occasionally, in various desperate acts of fan-service, a line from Season 1 is jammed in where it doesn’t belong. One Season 1 callback in particular during the season finale made me laugh out loud in dismay. I may or may not have shouted at my TV.

Oh god... the others were forced and there was no need for them, can only imagine what it is if this writer is calling it out.
We know the symbol, Rusts dad, and the Tuttles have all been mentioned/played a role.
What the frick else outside of Rust showing up (which has been confirmed isn't happening) could this writer be on about?
ETA: I remember in the flashback of Navarros mom at some point I thought "that shot reminds me of season 1 and the feel". I wonder if she was part of the cult/abused and thats what drover her crazy
Or does Childress make an appearance?

It's common for them to watch a full season ahead. Doing a hit piece with two weeks left is not. This guy is absolutely being a dick.
He knows he can generate traffic from the angry fan boys, but such a piece should have run in two weeks. Criticizing specifics from episodes unseen by the general viewers is downright douchey.

I mean, its gotta be a cameo by one of the original cast or is it as terrible as the cave has a portal to louisiana?

his twitter is linked at the bottom of the article. he does sound a lot like us. he's definitely left of center (which is not like most of us) but he has been waging a personal war on wokeness in entertainment it seems. he has some pretty reasonable takes.

Maybe there will be enough uproar that HBO will just say "frick it" and release the last two together to put it to bed.

This is the tigerdroppings bubble effect.
It might not be that great of a show, but the numbers for it are very strong. They've grown each week (don't know the numbers from yesterdays episode) but episode 3 had 2.7 million viewers. By comparison, episode 3 of Successions final season had 2.5 million and the highest vieweship The White Lotus ever got was 2.3 million. And that was with Night Country having to compete with the 9ers/Lions game.
Again, I'm not trying to make an argument for this being a great show, but just going off numbers, it's doing good. Not even close to a "aw to hell with it it sucks just release the final two episodes and we cut our losses" type thing like you're suggesting.

That doesn’t explain Annie’s tongue being at the research facility.
Her tongue was cut out when she was murdered and left in the ice cave. She may have cut it out herself due to toxin/bacteria induced madness. Clark finds the tongue in the caves just before the series starts and is exposed to the toxin/bacteria at the same time. He brings it back to the station while going nuts and starts everything in motion.

They died of toxin/bacteria madness in the ice caves, the mine people drug them out to keep their secret.

who the hell was Clark again? these characters are all a blur.

HBO knew what it was doing. If they had released this show as "Night Country" without the laundering affect of having True Detective out in front, it would have nowhere near the viewership numbers it has.
