Some one posted that the title song was the worst for any in television history. I hope they were just trolling
Its a perfect song in its style and lyrics for this event.
I was telling my friends how this show might be based on the Jennings 8 murders and when we googled and watched the news report this song started the report. Was creepy

So you are saying that Rust was an addict before he spent 4 years UC? I thought he mentioned that the extended time UC was the cause for his addiction?
Yes from everything I can remember off top of my head.
He was undercover on a normal undercover job first before the 4 year job.
His child was killed and he struggled dealing with it. (Not sure if that is what pushed him towards undercover work or not. As I am not sure of the timeline) Details of his child's death, we do not know yet.
He was messed up after this, dealing with the death of his child. So when he found suspect "Tom White" had injected his kid with drugs. He shot and killed him.
This is what got him in trouble with the choice of either jail time or working with handler Agent Brooks. (This is when the letter came in)
He then stayed under cover for about 4 years and that ended with the biker shootout.
After this he was "owed" a few favors for serving all that time undercover. He was offered pysch pension but he turned it down and asked them to assign him to homicide detective.
This is how he ended up at LSP

Whoaa, did I miss this somewhere? I can't remember this being mentioned.
Although that other thread on page 1 has fricked up my brain about this show pretty good. I could've just forgot.
That does make sense like you said though

yeah, I think he told the detectives about this in episode 2 when he gave them a quick background when they asked about his time in the psych ward

It was mentioned in the 2012 interviews.

Nope, he was UC before this letter (the 4 years, hence the praise from the AG).
He was using narcotics before this letter, which was due to the extended time he spent UC. (AG mentions this in letter)
Either Brooks sent Rust to LSP, or this whole thing is wayyy deeper/complex than we are getting into yet.
In Episode 4, he speaks with his "handler" from his UC days. Im wondering if this is Agent Brooks.
I have also thought that maybe Rustin is still UC, but on the inside of the LSP, (which personally I wouldn't like. I tend to believe the LSP are the most respected LEA in the state and above/ or not as corrupt as parish LEA's) getting to the bottom of the corruption in the state from Gov Tuttle's office, to Reb Tuttle to the LSP Dept.

There seems to be a little bit of discussion in the other thread about a certain dinner. Anyone want to talk about that?

I refuse to go to that other thread but I am pretty sure my timeline is correct. Don't want it to ruin the show for me. I have not re-watched anything or looked this up though.

Someone who is good with Photoshop, take a look at this pic posted on their Instagram.
True Detective clue on Instagram
Between Marty's nose and the books, there is cursive writing that is very faint. Maybe someone who can manipulate the picture can see what is in the writing. Thanks.
