until last night, there wasn't this massive "shift" to a disregard for the mystery/plot
because last night the show ended and people finally realized they were wrong.
it's not hard to comprehend.

Is SFP a "flat character" irl? Because I'm fairly certain in one of his post episode lectures he basically said he is just like Rust.

Your definition of a "flat" character--i.e., a character who doesn't undergo "significant" change (whatever that means, since Rust undergoes change)--is poor.
i had to lol b/c i went to find a definition and the very first was this
quote:
Definition: A flat character is a minor character in a work of fiction who does not undergo substantial change or growth in the course of a story
about.com
dictonary.com
quote:
an easily recognized character type in fiction who may not be fully delineated but is useful in carrying out some narrative purpose of the author.
sounds like Rust exactly
EM Foster (Via wiki)
quote:
Flat characters are two-dimensional, in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a work.
that Forster definition basically dominates the googlesphere, and that definition is what i stated

and outside of a few, they didn't. hell the story didn't even get to the point where their predictions COULD pan out

i haven't heard that phrase offered very often. i've just heard that i was wrong for, apparently, being right

yes. i'm pretty mind-numbingly consistent

What kind of predictions are you talking about specifically?

in an earlier thread he claims to be like Rust and thats why he knows his character can't exist

It did resolve itself

you think various texas agencies would rely on a guy like Rust to perform deep undercover work?
I do. They usually depend upon people who are a little off like that, to get involved in the deep undercover work. The run of the mill, 9-5, everyday employees don't fit into the undercover work and underworld.

rust can't work within the confines of a normal investigative/CID unit...how could he ever obey the intricate rules and chain of command of deep UC work?
That's the very reason why he probably was picked to work in the deep UC work. See above.
And you keep talking about him changing. Remember DiCaprio's role in The Departed? It wasn't like he made some eye popping change over the course of the show. He was a tormented soul throughout, struggling between the deep UC work and torment, and yet maintaining his sanity. I didn't consider his character "flat".

pretty much any question about the cult/group (motivation, history, explanation, connection with the yellow king, members, splinter groups, symbolism, etc)
pretty much any question about the dora lange murder except that errol was involved.
lots of theories about the children (including marty's daughter)
like i've said many times, there is a large gap between 0 (which is basically what we got) and having EVERY detail explained.

that's a literary meme and is far from realistic
deep UC work is for the best of the best who have proven themselves within the confines of the agency
that's why we rely on special forces to do that kind of shite in terms of the military

we know errol was involved in some murders and carcosa was likely the tunnels on his property

it was his dads (childress) property. family's been there a long time. we may not know the details but that was the site of all the rituals that had been taking place for decades.

That's how you view it. I think most people, like myself, saw it as pretty obvious he was in the carcosa cult which also involved Tuttle and sheriff childress. He just happened to be the worst one
Just because it wasn't spelled out for you in specifics, it doesnt mean it didn't answer any questions for anybody else

that wasn't even where the family was from, i dont' think. i thought the family was from more north and central...not SWLA

Well, in terms of getting the bad guys and confessions, they established clearly that Rust was the best of the best, within the confines of the agency. Seems to me that they did a fine job of establishing that in his character. The fact that he had other flaws that came out in his work at the agency doesn't undo that. Actually, it makes it more believable.
And if you think that special forces guys are choir boys that never step outside of expectations, you're naive. Things get taken care of outside of the public eye for the very reason that they are the best of the best at what they do. Like Rust.
