The fact you are a teacher cheapens the profession.
Your schools SPS is probably Abysmal

It was released in the summer

At one time, it was funny and cool to say that it is a Christmas movie.
People got a chuckle out of it.
Now that that view is mainstream, al of those who thought they were special by holding that opinion now view it as a mainstream uncool opinion.
When the view shifts, they’ll switch sides on the debate again.

John McClain said it wasn’t a Christmas movie.

It was released in July. Is it a Christmas in July movie?
It's a funny phenomenon though, that's for sure.

During this holiday season, which movie have you done a rewatch?
Die Hard
Elf
Bad Santa
Christmas vacation
Christmas Story
Home Alone
Scrooge
I’m guessing if this was a poll, Die hard would get less than 1% if any votes at all.

If John McClane had killed Hans with a Red Ryder BB gun he got for Christmas as a kid then maybe it's a Christmas movie.
And while Holly McClane did a complete turnaround toward her husband she wasn't visited by ghosts of Christmas past to come to that conclusion.
There's no Christmas themes or messages in the film unless Santa is the one who is really stealing from the Nakatomi Corporation. It's a Heist movie. Being set during Christmas does not a Christmas movie make...unless Christmas is about Blow, Terrorists, Twinkies and Berretas.

IMO a Christmas movie a movie that I wouldn’t watch any other time of the year.
I would watch die hard year round, so it’s not a Christmas movie. I would not watch frosty the snowman in June, because it’s a Christmas movie.

I could watch Home Alone year round as well, but I would definitely consider it a Christmas movie.

Even the studio says it's a Christmas movie and they have a trailer to prove it:

It's a Christmas movie as much as Gremlins is.

So were Christmas In Connecticut, the original Miracle on 34th Street, and Gremlins. I guess they're out too ehh?

I haven't seen Gremlins in years, but I never thought of it as a Christmas movie.
